This is my first post on the forum so go easy please. There are plenty of talented people on here and I thank them for the time and work they put in to helping others.
I used method 2 and rooted my N7000 with no problems the guide was really good and easy to follow. I have never done anything like this before so was quite glad all went well. That's all I have done and have not installed any other roms etc.

Method2:
Rooting with Stock Recovery+Safe Kernal + CWM Recovery: [recommended]

I have searched on the forum about unrooting the phone if perhaps I was going to sell it. There is plenty of information but I am a bit lost as to what method to use and I have read about the brick bug and mines has the insane chip. I am using a stock firmware ics 4.0.4 xxlrk . The safest step by step method of unrooting and going back to stock ics would be most appreciated.
BTW,

You are now on safe kernel (PhilZ) so there is nothing to worry about the bug. I would relax and just enjoy it.

Going back to stock can be more problematic and can introduce new issues on the way.

Download the stock firmware and flash it using Odin.. This will get it to unroot.. but DO NOT wipe (stock ICS recovery} on a stock ICS kernel. More help on using odin can be found here
So I press home + power + volume down to go into download mode. Then using Odin install the xxlrk firmware and install that. Does that also take away the cwm as well as unrooting it.

Thanks forest1971 I only want to know in case I was selling it or giving it to someone else. I just wanted to return it to factory settings. It was so simple in the first instance to root and install cwm but it seems a bit of a task to undo these changes.

This is slightly off topic but thought I might ask. I used cwm to make a backup and it put it in internal storage. I then made another as I wondered why it never put it in external storage in the first place. I wasn't until later I realised I could have probably just copied it across to my external card from the internal storage.
Where is the best place to keep the backups internal storage, external sd card or computer. I was trying to copy one of them onto my computer for safe keeping but it was taking an absolute age so just cancelled it.
Are these cwm backups just copies of my files and apps or are they images the likes of which Acronis True Image and Norton Ghost for computers.

There are some menu in the PhilZ CWM touch recovery. You can play with it and explore different setting. There is a custom back up menu to choose where to back it up.
You can keep in both internal and ext sdcard and computer as well. More is safer .

Thought I would give you an update on how I got on with your help.

Downloaded Odin, and the XXLRK firmware from Sammobile. Started the Note n7000 in download mode, connected to the computer by usb and started Odin. Selected the firmware through Odin and in about 5 minutes Odin completed installing. Started the phone and all files and apps were there as before. The phone was unrooted and cwm was no longer installed.
Then I opted to do a factory reset just to make sure all was working properly. Again in about 5 minutes the restore completed successfully.

I have now rooted the phone again using method 2 as before and reinstalled all apps. The phone is working perfect and a joy to use.Again thanks for your help.

I thought I would give the update for anyone else that wanted to try and root their phone and then restore it back to stock factory settings for some reason.

Hello XDA,
I know there are lot of guides on how to root the Galaxy Note ,but unfortunately I have not seen a guide that is clear enough to beginners that know nothing about Android. So, after hard work I have done a guide on how to root the Samsung Galaxy note and put it in your hands.

Note:I Have Also Made A Picture Full Guide So, IF This Guide Wasn't Clear For You, You Can Go HERE

Introduction:
Today, I will guide you on how you can root your Samsung Galaxy Note Gt-N7000 that has ice cream sandwich on it. We have two ways for rooting this device. The first one is very simple because it involves install an app then get root from that app.The other method is rooting via stock recovery, it will also install a safe kernel and ClockWorkMod recovery.

Disclaimer:
I’m not responsible if something went wrong on your phone(Usually nothing goes wrong), you’re doing this on your own responsibility.
Rooting your device will void your warranty. To know more about rooting check What is rooting and it’s top 10 benefits.
Backup your Data like contacts and apps so IF something bad happened you will be prepared.
All these methods WONT trigger the yellow triangle. :D

Remember:.
it's Always better to backup your device before proceeding with any of these methods. You can also always check my article about How To backup Every Android Mobile Phone

Method1:Rooting via installing an application:
This method is very easy and simple but not recommended because you will have to patch the exploit (the bug) that allowed you to root which Might make your camera stop working but the camers will also work again after you unpatch the exploit. Also, this will change your phone status to modified. So, only do this if you are sure that you want to root your device easily.
Step1:Download the apk(the application) from Chainfire Original Thread.

Step2: After you have finished downloading the app. Install it by going to the directory you download it to, then click on it. If you got this error message
Go to Setting-> Security-> Tick “Unknown Sources”

Step3: Now open the app and click “Root device”. As showen.

Step4:Now you will get this screen so click “Grant”.

Step5: Now your device is rooted but,for Security reasons you have to tick “Disable Exploit” & “Disable Exploit on boot”. IF you had any issues with the camera than untick these options.

Step6: Now close this app and go to you app drawer where you will find a new app called SuperSu,click on it and when it opens it will ask you to update the binary so tab on “Continue”.
Finally this means you are rooted,
Hooray!

OR

Method2:
Rooting with Stock Recovery+Safe Kernal + CWM Recovery: [recommended]
Requirements:
1-You will need to download the kernel based on your rom from HERE (Download the .zip file only). You will find the kernel version in the “Setting-> About phone”. If you found problems to find your kernel don’t hesitate to ask.

Let’s Start:
Step1:Copy the .zip file to your External SD card
Step2: Now shutdown your galaxy note completely. Then, boot into recovery mode by holding the volume up+ the home button, Now press the power button ONLY for 5 seconds.(Keep pressing the Volume up +Home button after you see your phone model screen)
Step3:After then you will see the recovery menu,Now choose “install update from External SD”. And choose the .zip file we downloaded earlier .
Step4:Then choose yes. Now your phone will install the root. After your phone reboots you should see SuperSu app in your app drawer.

Hooray You’re ROOTED

NOTE:This method will root your phone + install CWM recovery but if you wanted to only root then follow method 3.

Method3:Rooting with Stock Recovery:
NOTE: This method could brick your phone if you wipe your data\factory reset. So, make sure you don’t wipe data\factory reset. Or root using method 2.
Requirements:
Download these files:
1- Root_Busybox_1.20.2.zip
2-Root_SuperSU.0.95-FreeSpace.zip

Let’s Start:
Step1:Copy both files to your External SD card
Step2: Now shutdown your Galaxy Note completely. Then, boot into recovery mode by holding the volume up+ the home button, Now press the power button ONLY for 5 seconds.(Keep pressing the Volume up +Home button after you see your phone start.)
]Step3:After then you will see the recovery menu, Now choose “install update from External SD”. And choose the “Root_SuperSU.0.95-FreeSpace.zip” file we downloaded earlier .And choose yes.
Step4:Now go back to the main recovery menu,Aslo Choose “Install update from External SD” And choose the “Root_Busybox_1.20.2.zip” file we downloaded earlier. After your phone reboots you should see SuperSu app in your app drawer.

Hooray You’re ROOTED
Thanks. My Galaxy Note Kernel Version is 3.0.31-906407. Which Zip file do I use?

Galaxy Note 1 Build JZO54K.N7000ZSLR1

Hi,

I just read The Beginner's Guild to Root Galaxy Note, I am not sure which kernel I need to download for use with Method 2 to root my phone. My Galaxy Note 1 is running JB 4.1.2. Baseband Version is N7000XXLT3, Kernel Version is totally different than what was explained on the guide. My Kernel Version reads something like this: 3.0.31-1279458
[email protected] #3
SMP.PREEMPT Mon Jun24 19:41:50 KST 2013

No idea which kernel will match with this version for the root process; I looked in the link provided, seems like it's all letters for the kernel files and not numbers like mine, not sure what to look for there; if someone could kindly point me the right file to download, that would be much appreciated!!

Also, the Build number on my phone is: JZO54K.N7000ZSLR1

Yes, I am planning to use method 2 to root my phone, seems to be the easiest and safest way to do so. Thanks a bunch!!

There seems to be no kernel matching the rom you have but the closest seems to be ZSLO2... although XXLTA and XXLSZ all should work.. but not sure.. If you dont like to take chances, use Method3..

I want to use Method 2, but I don't know which of Phil's kernels to use. I searched in his thread for LC1 and found nothing. A post in another thread said he did not make kernels for GB.

Android 2.3.6
baseband version N7000XXLB2
kernel 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLC1-CL1003701
[email protected]#2
build # Gingerbread.XXLC1

Which kernel should I use?

(edit: reread opening post - I guess this thread is only for ICS and later? Is there a similar thread for GB users?)

Hi, thanks for the reply. So are the files mentioned in method 3 safe for all built of Galaxy Note 1? The method mentioned something about you can possibly brick your phone, what would cause the phone to brick up?? Pray tell, thanks!

That's when you are on an ICS stock recovery. Just flashing the zip will only root.. but it will be on the stock kernel.

It would be helpful if the title were "[Beginners Guide] How to root Samsung Galaxy Note from ICS", or something like that.
