Hello,
I am stuck installing recovery, 2 signs that in no other thread had being discuss, at least i didnt found.
first in powershell i got the promt:
fastboot : The term 'fastboot' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program.
Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.
At line:1 char:1
+ fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
+ ~~~~~~~~
+ CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (fastboot:String) [], CommandNotFoundException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : CommandNotFoundException
second, in fake recovey i got the promt :
MD5 no found
skiping MD5
failed to instal ....zip

Trust me, when it comes to software, this phone can't be killed. Even hard brick can be solved, there is thread somewhere. This seems like a soft brick or glitch or something. I don't REALLY understand tho. You can try to wipe whole internal storage from twrp (tick every box under advanced wipe except for sdcard) and flash another rom from sdcard.
Pre-rooted ZIP does cause boot loop if you don't tick Include Kernel in PRFCreator (unticked by default). Please add this detail to the second post.

Fairly noob here. I once rooted a previous Xperia (M, I think) with towelroot, but haven't attempted anything similar since.
I'm trying to update my elderly Z1C, because when I looked at replacing it, I couldn't find anything that I liked better.
I've been reading up and trying to follow the steps in this guide, but have stumbled over some broken links in the intro section:
"Navigate to your C:\Flashtool\drivers and run Flashtool-drivers
Select Flashmode drivers, Fastboot drivers and Xperia Z1 Compact drivers and click install
Now download THIS and THIS and put it in C:\Users\username\.flashTool\firmwares"

"THIS and THIS" are both broken, with no clues as to what they were originally.

I assume that one of them would be a KitKat rom 14.4.A.0.108 and I've downloaded this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/general/stock-rom-xperia-z1c-d5503-14-4-0-108-t2839005
Is that ok? But what was in the second link, please?

I hope that @colaigor or someone else can help me out.

I've retired my Z1C long time ago but I will look that up.

EDIT: I can access both links. They are mega files that I uploaded to my account because they were on confusing and non English sites. Here are the links

My sincere apologies. I got pages at mega.nz which said my browser was out of date and I mistakenly read them as being similar to those spam pages that say "Your Flash Player Needs Updating". Whereas, the site was actually referring to my outdated version of Edge that came pre-installed with Win10!

I see that the second download is 14.6.A.1.236 - which was the firmware you started from. Presumably I should find a copy of 5.1.1.236 as my recovery, as that is my current firmware level?

No worries!
I'm not quite sure what are you saying. .236 is latest and also last official z1 compact firmware. If you are talking about TWRP recovery version, download one from thread

I can't flash anything in Flashtool, whenever it asks me to reboot to flash mode, I do the volume down thing and the LED flashes red, then green, and turns off. Both adb and fastboot work just fine. I've tried a few different USB cables, different USB ports (my motherboard doesn't have any 2.0 ports so 3.0 has to do), it always does the same...

Do you have real recovery which you get when updating to latest official lollipop firmware? If your bootloader is open, you can try to update to it via the sony emma tool. After that try to flash twrp.

The whole point of this thread is to not unlock your bootloader until you have a TA backup. I don't know what "real" recovery is - is there a "fake" recovery and a "real" recovery? :D I was on the latest official firmware, which is 5.1.
Anyway, I've already decided not to bother and just unlocked my bootloader the regular way. This phone is old enough so it has been out of warranty for a while now anyway.

I have not suggested that! Next time be more polite.

When you update to latest official firmware, you get the "real" recovery how it is called and known for the z1 compact. The recovery was moved to an own partition I guess. That is why it was called "real" recovery.
