Well after tons of banging my head against the wall and after 3 days of reading forum postings I almost gave up.

But success. This morning I found a posting with an updated TWRP recovery image that actually works!
This was important to me because I had unlocked the bootloader by using the Motorola site to get my key and willingly void my warranty but I could not install a twrp recovery image in order to backup all the partitions to the virtual sdcard. I really wanted to do that before a possible boot loop or soft brick or whatever the experts would call it.

It seems this image was just created and posted in the past few days but I found it necessary because twrp-2.xx for the Moto Z would install but not run. Just got the tiny Android with a red triangle ! and "No command".

So get twrp-3.0.3-n1_griffin_shreps.img using your PC (in my case Windows) and then use the adb push command to copy it to your Moto Z.

Then follow the other threads which I will try to find again and post here in order to install this recovery image. Oh... here they are...

To get the twrp recovery image...

To borrow just the necessary steps from:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/development/android-nougat-moto-z-versions-t3506342

Do this...

adb sideload UPDATE-AnyKernel2.zip
adb sideload superuser-r259.zip
