Had no idea Play Books supported epub! Thank you the tip fellas!

you can also check ebooks.com, kobobooks.com, and diesel-ebooks.com for epubs.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Fabrik. I purchased the pro version and it was awesome, however I have recently switched to PlayBooks for one reason: I can read my books on my PC at work in my browser and it still syncs.

I'd be open to other apps if they have the PC sync + reading functionality but haven't noticed any....

edit: nevermind. It appears the nook app does this as well. Gonna have to check it out.

Amazon Kindle, hands down. I just email my EPUBs to my Kindle address then I can download them on all of my devices and Whispersync keeps my location in my books up to date!

I highly recommend Google Play Books for epubs as well. It is very nice looking, smooth, and the sync feature is great. I also LOVE the look of the widget, it is the centerpiece of my home screen. My only complaint is no support for my comics in cbr format, and also it seems that pdf pages (both pdf books and cbr->pdf conversions) load rather slowly at times.

But if you will solely be using epub, you can't go wrong here. You may have problems uploading converted epubs though.
regarding the play books widget, what do you find useful about it? all i see are my books in a stack that i can thumb through. doesn't seem useful at all to me, unless i were reading a dozen books at a time and needed a quick way to scroll through them. even then i'd probably just open the app and use the "recent" tab.

I ended up buying Moon Reader+. But I'm so impressed by the PlayBooks app's slick effects and implementation, that I may just try importing EPUBs to it. I'm guessing it won't support PDFs.

I said I love the LOOK of the widget :) It just adds a certain oomph to my homescreen. As for it's usefulness, it isn't any more useful than other readers' shortcut widget, I just find it to be much better looking ( same is true for the app in general).

I also should add that Kindle is a good alternative to Play Books. I find the uploading through email, or loading from local storage, to be much faster and functionally the app is just as competent. I only converted to Google play books when I saw how nice the layout was and how smooth that page flipping animation is! If you have trouble with uploading epub or PDF I definitely recommend Kindle, especially because it is less strict about size limits.

Just started using Play Books as suggested in this thread, primarily because of the syncing feature. Does anyone know how long it takes to actually get your progress saved on one device such that you see it on another? Or what actually activates the syncing?

For example, if I'm on page 100 on my Nexus7 and I read 5 pages, and then open the same book on my phone immediately, will it open up to page 105? I did this exact operation (with diff page numbers) last night, and this morning my phone still hasn't synced to the page I read up to on the n7 for some reason.

I have been using overdrive. My local library is setup to use overdrive. The reader is quite usable and the download features makes borrowing from the library a snap.

I just got my new Nexus delivered to Bangkok and I am wondering if I can somehow migrate my kindle ebooks to Moon Reader. Search did not find anything, hence I assume not but worth to ask over here :). Play Books sadly does not work over here as well :(. Any advice?

Just use the kindle app and email your epubs to your kindle email. Then they're stored on the cloud and you can grab them from any device and have your location synced
