There are a few reasons why GCam isn't as good as it could be on this phone.

For starters, none of the modders owns and actually uses this phone (tigr has a Xiaomi, but it's not curtana). We don't have someone actually tweaking things for this phone... GCam works, but it's not fully optimised.

    Then there's the hardware:
    • The camera lens seem to be cheap - like on other low cost Xiaomi devices - and this affects the quality a lot. Things like lens flare for example are worse on cheap lenses.
    • Sensors... They're cheap, from different brands, and each sensor needs different tuning to create acceptable photos. Eg: compare macro and main camera's white balance indoors.
    • The 48MP sensor on the 9S/9 Pro (India) is worse than the 64MP on the global version. And both are worse than the 48MP Sony IMX586 that many 2019-20 phones use. The IMX586 itself seems to be inferior in certain aspects when compared to the older 12MP sensors used by Google.
    • Not using Sony sensors also means that some features (eg: improved details when using zoom) can't be used.
The sensors part is especially important. My previous phone (OnePlus 3, from 2016) takes better photos with GCam than the Note 9S. It's not that it's a better phone, but its sensor is similar to the one used by Google. GCam processing hasn't been optimised for these new sensors with +48MP that use pixel binning.

I'm on a few groups and follow some threads for other phones here on XDA and it's common to see users complaining about a drop in GCam quality when they move from an old phone (OnePlus 3/3T, Poco F1, etc) to a new phone (OnePlus Nord, 8, 8T, etc) with a Sony IMX586 or some Samsung sensor.

To get good quality with GCam, the hardware (camera sensors and SoC) needs to be similar to what Google uses on their phones. Since they haven't joined the latest megapixel war with quad bayer sensors, we're kinda screwed here.

I have a curtana device (Redmi Note 9S). So far I've been testing this gcam mod (onfire), trcamera, and pixelcam plus 2, on stock rom, without root (I'll test them again on rooted custom roms later, after the one-week unlock bootloader wait time, and possibly with 48MP hack from magisk). Here are my experiences:
    1. This gcam mod (by onfire) HDR sharpening is too aggressive by default, leading to many color noise specs in both front and back camera pictures. @1812CE I sympathize with your reaction, but I'll try to put a bit more politeness in my post, just to acknowledge @maneeshkumar75's time and effort for this mod.
    2. trcamera v7 final (by tigr) has the closest color balance to the stock cam, but because of that, picture is kinda a bit blurry and have some noise in dark region.
    3. Pixelcam_plus v2 (by jairo_rossi) has the best back camera quality overall (i.e. high contrast, crisp detail, no noise in dark area, in fact, it is the closest to my pixel 2016). However, the front camera with HDR is a bit aggressive (though not aggressive as onfire's mod). Turning OFF HDR for front camera, although making the image looks more natural, is too noisy.

By the way, I HATE AWB (Auto white balance). It makes all my outdoor pictures pinkish (or purplish). Turning it off produce a much more true and natural color scheme. Also, I have a quite shaky hand, so HDR+ enhanced is blurry, compared to regular HDR+.

In all of my test, I have no issue with video recording or slow motion. This is probably because I'm having a curtana instead of joyuse. Many joyuse users have reported that video only works with 1.1x zoom. All cameras works (including wide angle (aux) and macro). And yes, in all gcam mods I tested, the front camera takes 4MP picture instead of 16MP.

For now, PixelCam Plus v2 by jairo_rossi, together with the xml from the xda thread "[tested]pixelcam+ 7.3 by jairorossi for redmi note 9s" (google it for the link, I can't post link here), is best suited for everyday usage of back camera, and is somehow OK for front camera. I only use the front camera for video call. For selfie lovers, go for stock cam if you're on MIUI, or 3rd party apps like beautyplus or something.

Update on the GCam mods and XMLs i use on my Redmi Note 9 Pro (EEU - Joyeuse)

Please make sure to have either some Google Apps installed, or Micro G´s service Core or the GCam-Services-Provider App.
None of the following apps were created or modified by me. This is just my personal choice and may give you a start if you are new to GCam mods. There is no "best" version suited for every taste and usecase and i want to thank all modders - especially the ones i did not mention - for their great efford. Please make also sure to read this thread and compare versions. I tried to use non-Telegram links wherever possible.

    TR Camera BTS by tigr
TR Camera by tigr is quite stable and has a lot of options.
It supports aux cameras and you can directly control focus and exposure.
As XML i use [Tr-BTS]Simplicity2 by az for natural colors. You can find it in this telegram group @Curtanaphotography).

Please download Born To Shot Version from here (newer ones are sometimes buggy on Joyeuse): https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-tigr/

    MGC by B-S-G
MGC_8.0.018_A9_V0g by B-S-G works now on Joyeuse and Android 11 (Arrow OS). Please use Clone version.
After first start, change input Device Bonito, HDR+ device Redfin, Preview format YUV and RAW 16.
It does not have a lot of features, and not aux cameras but it is quite stable, very usable and - well, it´s a GCam 8.
It also does very fast processing of your pictures. No XMLs possible.

Download: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-bsg/ or use the official Telegram support group @bsg_googlecamera.

    ctgcam by ctwoon
ctgcam by ctwoon works out of the box and flawless on Redmi Note 9 series.
And it has the best selfie camera libaries (you also get two to choose from - i prefer the standard one).
    Find it on Telegram @CTGcam.

    Butchercam 2.2
Butchercam produces the most beautiful and sharp images.
It sometimes really reminds you of an DLSR.
I usually switch between two XMLs.
    - [Butchercam V2.2]Simplicity2.xml by az (optimized for AWB On)
    - [Butchercam V2.2]Simplicity3.xml by az (optimized for AWB Off)

Butchercam 2.2 was not yet loaded to celzos site, so i would recommend you to use the official Telegram channel @butchercam.
You can find the mentioned XMLs in the Telegram Group @Curtanaphotography (under files tab).

    PixelCam X 3.0 by jairo_rossi
This camera app is something else, when it comes to colors and interesting xmls.
Please use them only with a stand or calm hands and patience.

    My mostly used xmls are:
    - Kodak 8K Pixel X 3.0 Legion MTX by aftab (good colors and very sharp)
    - Saturated Colors Pixel X 3.0 Legion MTX by aftab (very good colors)
--> find xmls at Telegram @Curtanaphotography (under files tab)

Download on jairo_rossi´s official website https://pixelcambrasil.com.br/pixelcam-x/
