Just FYI.
Temp root achieved on SM-N9200 without flashing (Knox intact). Defeated Knox Active Protection but no way to defeat DM-Verity or kernel verification. So it seems a boot-loader bug is mandatory to achieve permanent root now.
Wish others good luck~~
Extremely sad face.

Actually, some of use will be very happy with a temp root that keep KNOX intact... Can you share?

Still facing some stability issue, may update my PingPong root to provide temp root feature for Exynos 74xx devices
p.s. not for bounty ;) it shall go to the guy whom breaks the secure boot chain.

What exactly does that mean? I am in China now. I have the note 5 Sm-n9200 version, can I finally root and keep Samsung pay or not? I have been dying to root this beast but I don't want to miss out on features.

Some light system mod, like audio routing, host file for ad blocking, csc edits, stuff like that, once the edit is done, root is not needed anymore.
Sounds good. I bet some of them require system parition editing? If so it won't work for now since system partition is dm-mapped and protected. Any modification will be dropped shortly and in case it goes through, dm-verity will kick-in during next boot and boot-loop happens :(

Some slight progress.. We need more
I have this phone and just discovered the other day that it is not easily rootable. The primary reason I buy Samsung products is because I hate Apple's locked down products. -- and now I find that Samsung is doing the same exact crap that Apple does! The Note 5 may very well be the last Samsung phone I purchase.

Anyways, I'm interested in searching for vulnerabilities to enable a full & persistent root on my device. Is anyone aware of a resource online that outlines the technical details that have been uncovered thus far (hash and digital signature algorithms used for integrity, history of attempts, etc.)?

Thanks,
AF

I'm kinda new to this, but I'd like to offer my help in finding a solution. I have some coding/hacking experience, albeit very little, but I'm willing to do whatever I can to help. If anyone has information or resources where I can educate myself on the required topics to begin looking into this, it would be appreciated. Also, to anyone that is already working on it, if you would like to collaborate feel free to contact me.

I left Verizon for this reason. They throw their weight around and Samsung caves to their requests to lock it down tight. You may notice the note 4 never got rooted. and the note 3 was only technically rooted, via safestrap, a hole they plugged soon after with a dedicated update.

Yeah I don't think I'll buy another phone on release day again. It really hasn't been a good experience. Besides the rooting, the battery already sucks and I owe $100 more than it's actually worth. I'm calling this one a loss all around.

Not happy about the Knox lock/brick on the Note 5.
I've got faith that Verizon and the Note5 can't defeat the crew that cracked the S5--or someone new.... who knows.
Since I don't have any real skills, I'm throwing in $20 to sweeten the pot a little.
