I'm on Ultimate N7000 XXLT4 JellyBean 4.1.2 v6. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1970626 I followed the instructions.

"If you want to have a safe kernel, you might want to flash this kernel with Odin : http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1068654&d=1337346991"

Well, I used MobileOdin to flash the kernel. I don't have Windows and therefore can't use Odin. But I can borrow a friend's Windows computer if needed to solve this issue.

Then suddenly, while MobileOdin was doing its "work", the Note shut off. I can't boot now. When holding the power button for what appears to be a longer time than usual to attempt to turn on the phone, the "Samsung Galaxy Note N7000" logo appears and the phone shuts off. The same happens when I try to boot into recovery.

Generally I don't recommend using mobile Odin unless you're confident in what you're doing.
you can always try to download all the necessary files to your micro sd card and then re-flash everything (I wouldn't recommend this either because if you don't know what you're doing it can make it even worse and possibly screw up your partitions if you accidentally clicked the thing)
With that being said, it's probably best that you go borrow a windows computer and use Odinand reflash your kernel and rom.
Do make sure you're running a safe kernel and a safe rom and follow all the correct steps.
give that a shot and see how it goes.
best of luck.

Thanks for replying. Yeah, I suppose I ought to stay away from MobileOdin until I get better at dealing with this sort of stuff.
