I'm very happy to report that I've not yet had a data disconnect on Epsylon3's 130612+ build when using only 2G or only 3G.

I've disabled Connectivity Checker for now, as the quality of the Edge network I'm connected to is too slow, and it thinks the data connection is down at times. I've noticed on the odd occasion that the signal indicator goes grey, but soon goes back to blue again (normal behaviour).

So in my case, only the 2G/3G auto mode is still suspect. This was the case about a month ago too, but then we went through a bad batch of builds causing even 2G only and 3G only to disconnect.

Please let me know if this is the case for others with the problem :)

EDIT: False alarm... about 25 seconds after posting I had a disconnect on 2G only :(

I'm back on maniacs latest cm7 build to test connectivity, perfect do far :)

I assume the build you're testing is cm-7-20120616-UNOFFICIAL-jordan-signed.zip

Does this mean the connectivity bug fix is not included in the freshly-released CM7.2 Stable build? I'd also like to test this fix out.

Sidenote: my data connection issues (on CM7.2 (20120610 Nightly)) continued with my MTN sim in the phone, and vanished the instant I switched to a Cell C simcard. So this bug really also seems to be network dependant.

ktmbikerman, what is your conclusion with regards to Maniac's latest build? Have you had more disconnects?

I've first tested CM7.2 Stable - when in 3G+2G mode, data seemed pretty stable, but I had one disconnection. In 2G-only mode, disconnects occurred more often, maybe once every 30 minutes. I tested this ROM for about 6 hours.

I then moved to Maniac's 20120616 Unofficial build. Unfortunately, I experienced some disconnects in both 3G+2G mode as well as in 2G-only mode on this ROM too.

So to sum up, I think Maniac is making progress (it seems better than before), but is still not completely fixed. Thanks for your effort and time Maniac103.

Howzit Viva_SA

Thanks for your feedback. I'm migrating my wife's Defy to Vodacom shortly, so I'll be able to see how well it works on that network.

I've used maniac's 120615 build now for the weekend and I only had data disconnects in areas where GSM coverage was a bit dodgy. I managed to capture 3 disconnects on logcat and hopefully maniac can analyse this when he's back from his holiday.

I've just downloaded the stable 7.2 build now and am about to install it.

Unfortunately my Telkom line and ADSL is down at home, so I was limited to a dodgy edge connection for the weekend. Hopefully Telkom will be repairing my line soon, it's been a week now

I'm becoming more and more convinced that the disconnect bug happens when switching between different generations of networks.

My service provider is Red Bull Mobile, which is a Mobile Virtual Network that piggybacks off Cell C. Cell C in turn, has a roaming agreement with Vodacom, so I can force my phone to only work on the Vodacom network. I believe the Vodacom Network is a newer generation than the Cell C 2G network. Since forcing my phone to work on Vodacom 2G, I've had no disconnects. If I let my phone auto select network and 2G/3G, I get disconnects all the time, which would explain why I sometimes get disconnects when using only 2G but allowing auto network selection.

Unfortunately the roaming agreement between Cell C and Vodacom only allows me to use the 2G Vodacom Network, so now and then I switch back to Cell C to access the 3G network. Whenever I do this, I have to manually restart data by toggling it off and on.

This would also explain why some users are plagued by this problem and others are oblivious.

I'll keep testing, but if anyone can confirm or disprove this I would be grateful.

PS. I've applied for a new contract for my wife (which comes with a defy+) on the Vodacom Network, so if that works without a problem it would also prove this.

i'm using epsylon's
CM9-NIGHTLY-120613-Defy+.zip
in germany with a provider called simply, which uses the o2 network.
and i must say, this is a catastrophy.
3g is not working at all, and 2g holds the connection not longer than 30 minutes.
the worst, calling is cut off too :/

is there any cm9-build for defy+ without this bug?

Your problem sounds more severe than what most of us are experiencing. Are you sure you're on the right baseband?

System Settings > Advanced > Baseband Selection

Looks correct although it might be worth trying some others. Does my post just above your first post here not have any baring on your problem?

It's impossible that it has something to do with switching cells,
since i was in the office and the phone was laying on my desk.

what i could imagine is, that it has something to do with sleep mode.

Your phone switches cells based on cell load too, so its very possible that it can switch while lying on your desk.

I didn't have a single disconnect today forcing my phone to work on Vodacom 2g.

I've also seen the disconnect happening while using the phone, so it definitely wasn't sleeping :)

My Defy lose connection when i leave it inactive for sometimes and i have to switch on/off plane mode to reactivate it. Could be the problem related to power management system?

A temporary fix

OK, I've been able to pin down with a very high degree of certainty what causes my data disconnects.

I've been using the latest FuZZ and Epsylon3 builds to do my tests, they both are pretty much the same (froyo kernel)

A disconnect happens 100% of the time when the phone is switched or switches itself from Vodacom 2G, a network I'm able to roam on, and Cell C 3G, the network my service provider Red Bull Mobile piggybacks on.

This can be tested my forcing the phone onto Vodacom 2G then selecting 3G only, which makes the phone switch back to Cell C as I'm not allowed to use the Vodacom 3G network. Every time this is done, data has to be enable manually by toggling data off/on.

My phone was running for two days without a single disconnect on Vodacom 2G only. At midday today I decided to switch it back to Auto Network Selection and Auto 2G/3G selection, and within 10 minutes saw my first disconnect when the phone switched itself from Vodacom 2G to Cell C 3G, the same behaviour as when the switch is forced.

So... for me to enjoy bug free data, I'll keep the phone on Vodacom 2G and force it to 3G and toggle data when needed.

Hope this helps those of you who have the same network scenario.

exactly the same only A1 for 2G and Drei for 3 G
