for some reason no one has been able to update the second time if you fail the first time, so your solution is update manually
Been there, done that, lost root access during it. If you don't want to unlock, skip the manual update and keep root.

My update failed 'cos I forgot to unfreeze an app -( my bad ) and was about to try a manual update but glad I saw Vap-66 comment about losing root. Am I now stuck with .17 until next Asus update ? Or am I best off just bite the bullet and unlock the bootloader and go custom rom (been waiting for an excuse - CM has given my Defy a real boost of life ! ) ?

You should have another chance with a new update (and Asus, if I remember correctly, said something about 4.2 this month). Wait until january, maybe Asus will release it until then and you can keep root plus warranty. If not, custom ROMs are there for you :D.

Battery Life

Hi all

I've updated my tablet and seem to have an issue.

Performance wise all seems ok, however the tablet now only wants to charge to about 86% no more.

Any ideas if this is related to the update or is my battery dying? All was fine before the update.

Thanks
Rich

I'm still on ics. 30 rooted not unlocked. How can I update AND keep root without unlocking?
It's easy with OTA Root Keeper and supersu or superuser. I find supersu more reliable.

Make sure all the stock apps are running (i.e. if you have frozen or deleted any, unfreeze or replace them first). Use OTA to disable root access then run the updater. Go back to OTA and restore root, sorted! You will probably have to run each update until you get to the latest version.

I'm not sure whether it helps or not to restore then disable root each time or whether you can wait until all updates have run. Because I've run each update as it became available I've done that and had no problems.

{YMMV, not responsible for bricking, etc! :D}

Hi everybody,
Got the update message on saturday but it failed. Now it says my device is up to date, i cant update anymore... any hint
On previous updates, I've deleted the update file from /cache/dlpkgfile, rebooted and run the update check again. That has picked up the update and downloaded it ok.

Thanks !

Choose OS Android -> Firmware -> Version V10.4.2.18 WW

but as vap_66 pointed out, you will lose root if you manually update, so if you have root you may want to try what madferret said above

or just don't update

updated via OTA from a very old and stock 9.x.y.z ICS, used supersu and ota rootkeeper, but seems that it cannot be restored, it hangs trying :crying:

PS: Holy S*it! I hopelessly wiped data, reinitialized my profile, tried to restore root without supersu installed and it worked!

I got V10.4.2.18 OTA, but updated failed

Update to V10.4.2.18 through OTA failed, then system reboot and stating it recovered the old version, which was .17. I went back to system update and can't get the update launch again. Any help?

Update worked fine. I was hanging out with a friend last night and in the car all of a sudden I saw it say an update was available. I meant to just download it in the car but it already downloaded and started installing. I freaked out but fortunately it was already unrooted and protect root. After it updated I was able to restore root. I think since jellybean and every single update I haven't lost root once. I haven't really noticed much difference but it is much faster. I say this everytime but it's so strange that when the tablet starts to act slower and lag a little bit more and to the point of irritation a new update comes out and fixes it to the next update.

Could be that I have too much crap on it too.

I was able to manually update with the zip from the ASUS site before but since the last update I can't, it failed with .17 and this one...

I copy the zip to the sd card and the tablet restarts to try to update, am I doing something wrong? I have not rooted or unlocked. I did change my firmware from CN to WW and I am getting the WW version from the site... any tips?

Thanks in advance

This is a bit off topic but i unlocked my bootloader and rooted for running ubuntu. What is the resolution i should select? As 800x400 is displaying in bottom right hand corner

The actual resolution is 1280 x 800 (including taskbar which takes up 48 pixels in both portrait and landscape). DPI is 160. Aspect Ratio @ 16:9 the aspect ratio of 800 x 400 is 2:1 so you should find a resolution that is closer to 16:9 in order to make things look ok. Good luck!

How are you guys updating? I tried OTA and it says no new update but I'm on .13 US I've tried for a few days now. I also tried manual updated by the sdcard and that fails as well...
