Alright, say I get an 5X, what should be the first thing I do? Update radio? unlock bootloader? Is there a guide? Anything I should know about the 5X (bad/good)? Do I need a screen protector or a case (I'm in Europe)? Anything to watch out for?

I had an S6 that I upgraded to the 6p from, then moved to the 5X. The 6p was way too big. The 5X is perfect.

I would say the first thing you should do is remember you have a nexus device, you can do almost anything you want with it. Root it, add another ROM (Pure Nexus recommended), then try another, and another. Read the threads here as there are a lot of people here smarter than me that can help beyond what I an saying.

I would also recommend the Ringke Slim case. Beautiful design.

Being this, enjoy the phone!

Before I forget, I love using Wug's Toolkit to root and install a custom recovery. Makes everything super easy to do. You can find it in the original development forum under it's own thread.

Others may say different, but each to their own I guess. This one is just the easiest way for me since I have used it for many Nexus devices in the past.

First thing is to unlock bootloader, if you want to flash roms. As that process wipes internal storage, do that first.
Follow this great tutorial by @Heisenberg to the letter.

As he suggests in that thread, make a backup of EFS partitionafter you install custom recovery.
And make sure you copy the twrp backup from your phone to PC or any reliable storage
place. EFS as you may know contains stuff like imei number and lots of things specific to your phone. In case anything goes
wrong with wifi mac address or imei, you can just copy that backup to your phone and restore it.

Then Download latest stock firmware from nexus factory images webpage.
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#bullhead The latest image is at bottom of list.
In case something happens to your device, like bootloop or soft brick, you can follow the thread below to flash stock images.
