Buying secondhand: any firmware I should avoid?

I think I'll be buying a secondhand Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (see details of its use below if interested).

Question: What is the best firmware release/s I should be searching for, if I plan to later root and install a ROM? (Or if it's an easier question. which firmware releases should I avoid?)

Note: I'm in Australia if that makes any difference to firmware versions. I probably will buy one in Australia, however I'm also watching ebay worldwide - so I'm ruling out buying from the USA/UK. I guess it depends on the answer to my firmware question.

Question 2: If the firmware version does matter, could someone please direct me where it's located on the tablet, so I can explain to sellers where to find it? For example, on my droid phone I click SETTINGS, scroll down to ABOUT, then SOFTWARE INFORMATION. Is the Note Pro 12.2 the same?

Planned use:

I've spent several days searching for a 12" (or larger) tablet - preferably Android. Among other things, it will be used to display and turn the pages of PDF sheet music using a bluetooth-connected foot controller. I even researched building a tablet myself using an old laptop touch screen, a display adapter, and a raspberry pi loaded with Android from Emteria, add a battery, charging circuit, laptop speakers, build a case, etc. But I'm not sure the piano music stand could hold the weight. So I'm aiming for something around 1.8 lbs (800 grams). I was really surprised to find how few 12-17" tablets there are. The Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 is long-discontinued, but (seems to be) the only tablet that comes close. I've seen e-ink tablets like the Onyx, but they're ridiculously expensive.

Anyway, any help is appreciated.
