Can Motorola be coming out with a Quad Core Nvidia Tegra 3 tablet in early fall?

I just read these rumors today. If this is true that Motorola might be the first to adopt the Tegra 3 quad core processor chip onto a tablet for a early Q3 fall release, I might hold off in buying my motorola xoom. The Tegra 3 chip is suppose to be released in August to manufacturers to put on tablets and smartphones and contains 3x faster graphics than the Tegra 2 with a 1.5 GHz max frequency. Check out the first link for the Nvidia roadmap for this year.

What do you guys think? Would you hold off in buying your xoom if this was true?

check out these 2 links about this story.

I am kinda torn on these new rumors. Part of me wants to get the xoom now and be done with it so I can start customizing it and playing with it. The other part of me thinks it might be smart just to wait a few more months especially if they say they will try to aim for a sept release of a quad core xoom. I would love to have the Tegra 3 processor since it has 3x graphics, supports higher resolution with blu-ray support, and 1.5Ghz max frequency.

I guess I'll stick to my plan of test driving the wifi xoom until june (90 days return policy at costo) and then re-evaluate the other tablets and make a decision by end of june.

Hopefully by june, there will be more news if these rumors are real or not.

So even if they release the chips to tablet manufactures in August, how long until we see a tablet using one? December? January? March? Later?

I'll enjoy my Xoom now, and when we finally see a Tegra 3...then I'll upgrade.
These tablets aren't nearly expensive enough to justify waiting around imo.
Besides, once the "Quad-Core Tegra 3" comes out, you know there will be rumors of a hex-core Tegra 4...how long will you wait?

Now if you don't need a tablet now, or are hard up for cash...by all means...

If you wait for the latest and greatest you will never own anything. 1 month after tegra 3 there will be tegra 5 already getting ready for production.

If you see the second story, the rumor is that motorola will try to be the first manufacturer to produce a tablet that uses the tegra 3 processor and the ship date around september which isn't too far away.

If the rumor said that tablets will not use the tegra 3 processor until next april, then there is no point in waiting.

Same old

Remember these same type of sources were predicting The Bionic would be out in Jan/Feb in the fall last year. Just have to figure out if you want a tablet now or not.

No absolutely not, because I have a XOOM now and I will be able to enjoy it until the new product is available. Then I will sell my XOOM to someone who doesn't always want the newest latest bleeding edge thing to subsidize the cost of my newest latest bleeding edge thing.

Thank you!

I agree on this 100%.. That's just how it is on the technology biz.. Once the new technology has been released, a better technology will be in line to get introduced not long after by the competitors.. And the good thing about us early adopters is that when upgrading time is up, we can sell our old device to get the new one, and those who wait ends up buying our old device from us.. Now the question is, which of the two would you wanna be?

It's my opinion that these rumors are being propagated by Moto/Android/Tablet competitors. Maybe Apple, but even more likely, places a little closer to home...like direct Moto Xoom competitors like Samsung and LG.

Think about it: how many games have come out that TRULY take advantage of dual core? How many games or apps have been released that truly take advantage of Honeycomb?

So many that we are all clamoring for quad core??? I think not. Not by a long shot.

Is Motorola working on a quad core device for release someday??? I'm sure they are, just like all manufacturers are. BUT dual core is where we are at and these rumors do NOTHING but stunt Xoom sales.

Now, who would do something like that? Google? Nope. Moto?? Nope.

I'll tell you who...the manufacturers who are all late to the game like Samsung who had to pull their 10.1 tablet and come up with a whole new one to even try and compete. LG maybe? Apple??

I cannot say, but something smells rotten. This bullshit rumor comes out to coincide with the Xoom WiFi launch is just too cute by half. Think about it for just a second: WiFi Xoom launches on 27th...on the 28th rumors of a Moto quad core come out???? That is no coincidence.

Somebody doesn't want us buying Xooms. And these same people will love selling us dual core devices in a few months when the rumors(they started) of Moto quad core have died out.

The shame of it is, if you delay your purchase waiting for the next great thing, you'll never buy, because as soon as it's released the next great thing vX.0 will be announced. Look at PC's over the years and how they've evolved, and continue to do so. Just too bad the tabs don't have socketed CPUs to upgrade.

Love the responses by everyone. Just wanted to know what your guys thoughts were. Most likely, I'll buy my wifi xoom to keep in june.

I bought the wifi xoom at costco to test drive it for 90 days to see if I like it. Then I plan to return it and test out the other tablets that are coming out in june. If I like the xoom still, I'll just buy it from amazon to use my gift card balance and no tax.

It won't be hardware that gets people to jump. A 4-core only runs faster, but a new Android rev will have more features. If Goog sticks to the 6-month cycle, then I-whazit would be a nice addition to that quad, hopefully in yuletide wrappings. We'll see if the early adopters have the stamina to keep up.

Haven't seen this link posted yet:
nVidia Kal-El

I am pretty sure we will have those chips in shipping products for Christmas shopping season. I think nVidia can execute well and it should have an easier time getting some design wins since the Tegra2 got Google's blessing.

One thing to remember is that Tegra2 is pretty old at this point, it was announced more then a year ago and did not really have any design wins until Google decided to use the SOC for Honeycomb. Now it would be foolish to think that Google chose this SOC without looking at roadmaps. It would also be foolish to think that Honeycomb cannot benefit from quad cores as the heavy lifting for multi threading is already done.

My personal point of view is the following, either be an early adopter and jump on the XOOM as soon as you can or wait for the holiday season. No matter how good the Samsung's look, it wouldn't touch them. I see them as 1.5 generation devices that will be released to close to Google I/O and most likely IceCream.

If you wait for holiday season, you should have a much more polished OS, hardware as well as a much more competitive landscape with better prices. My hunch is that we will see a Google Nexus Tab with quad core Kal-el somewhere in time for back to school/holidays. This would be very similar to the Droid with Android 2.0 to Nexus One with 2.1.

I was going for the XOOM wifi, but with lack of Honeycomb AOSP and a lack of real need for this device, I will wait...I could be wrong and we'll only know in six months or so!

TL;DR: By Xoom now or wait for holidays.
