They should be able to be made compatible if your rom has a lock ring. Its just an image that gets replaced. Can you clarify why it doesn't work?

Not sure why exactly. Followed the instructions written for zip themer: updated edify with my ROM's zip, configured, built the zip for the icon, flashed cwm touch 6.0.4.0 , rebooted back to system and icon was still the same.

Are these icons meant for aosp type Roms or a specific android version or are they truly universal? My ROM is based on stock motoblur and is android 4.1.2.

They are made to work on aosp roms. I was assuming it would be if you had a Nexus device. Not sure about motoblur compatibility. Do other zipthemer mods work on it or have you tried?

I haven't tried yet. I like my phones to have a stock look so I'm pretty satisfied with it. Just wanted to try out the lock ring icon change because I never knew you could do it without having to download a 3rd party app.

MotoBlur doesn't have themes. Lol.
Only thing I'm using is Nova Launcher and Xposed module for a digital battery mod. nothing else.

In the OP, there's a zip file to update edify when stock rom, I think everything's there.

Try using a gapps package to update. It doesn't have to be the rom zip, any flashable zip should work.
