Captivate random shuts down

If I recall, there was an issue with N1's acting up if clocked too slow also. SetCPU is showing 100Mhz when it bottoms out and my N1 baselined at 275....so maybe that is it cus I've had the same problems with it not waking and needing to pull the battery. I did a restore of my Nandroid backup from yesterday and the problem stopped....the only different apps I had installed were MarketEnabler,PDANet, and Appbrain. I did a complete wipe before the restore...

Captivate Shutting Down

Gah! Mine's doing the same thing! I bought this phone last Friday and it worked great for the first day and a half. Then after the second full charge it started shutting down for no reason. Thought it might have been the battery, which once I took the door off, did seem slightly loose on the end without the connectors. I taped a piece of paperboard in between the case and the battery so it didn't wiggle at all. And it STILL does it!

I'm thinking I might take it back and exchange it at the store at lunch today.

I have a few downloaded apps, basic ones only, nothing rooted and no changed major user preferences.

*sigh* this phone would be perfect if it would just STAY ON!!!!

I think it's "setcpu" causing it. I removed the app and it hasn't shut off since.
I can confirm that on MY Captivate it WAS DEFINITELY SetCPU. I didn't have to remove it though. I just made sure that the minimum frequency set was 200mHz and not 100mHz which is the default. Mine still hasn't shut off since then.

Might also want to turn off auto kill on your task killers...my phone was dropping every call as soon as I put it up to my face. I uninstalled Task Panel and problem solved. I don't know how or if it could be related but I reinstalled it and made sure it didn't auto kill and my phone is still working great. And yes I was at home with full bars the whole time and I threw my sim card in an old Blackberry to make sure it wasn't just AT&T bugging out. It seems like these phones respond REALLY well to task killers lol. Be careful.

Furthermore, SetCPU doesn't actually make the phone shut off, it is only the OnDemand governor that does. If I leave it on conservative then it doesn't shut off even with SetCPU installed.

This happened to me today. Brand new Captivate, picked up over the weekend (3 days old). The only apps I've installed so far: Barcode Scanner, Open Table, Key Ring, Adobe Reader, Digg, Documents To Go. Not rooted. No SetCpu, etc. Configured Exchange.

Before it froze (went to permanent sleep) I installed a Google Maps update, and fully charged until a message appeared prompting me to disconnect the charger.

Doing some digging... I dug up a post where the user writes:

well, just connected my phone to my laptop, downloaded some video I took, used the device manager to eject the phone and now the phone is off and wont turn back on. Had to physically remove the battery for a second to turn it back on. Grrrrrr
I'm wondering if this is somehow related to the USB port, charging, or power management.

Oh, and here's another post mentioning the same thing.

This is quite annoying. I've flashed the JM2 rom from the i9000 thinking it might be something screwy with the att rom, but to no avail. Still turns off from time to time.

Happened again just now no less then 2 minutes from coming off the charger.

I think what would be best is if those that have posted about this problem could track or note whether or not this problem occurred after charging the phone or using the phone's USB port in any way. It also might be helpful to know if the phone's included charger was used or if another USB charger was used instead.

I have had the same problem. For some reason it stops doing that after I changed my wallpaper. All I have installed on my phone are apps from google.

I am not sure why changing the wallpaper will stop it from randomly shutting down.

Could someone give this a try to see if it works?

At first I was using Aurora then switched to Blue Sea. That fixed it for a day. Then I plugged it to my computer via the given USB cable.

Then the next day it started doing the same thing again. Switched to a still background and that fixed it.

I do realize that at both times the battery has drained and it's not at 100% anymore. If that might be the problem.

My friend doesn't have this problem and we switched batteries and it still happens, before the wallpaper switch.

Reproduced exactly the same

I was able to reproduce mine exactly the same way. Last night I put my phone on the charger before bed and left it on all night. I took it off this morning and set it to vibrate when I left for work. My 9:30 AM meeting notification went off as usual and as I was about to pick up my phone to dismiss it I rememberd that I didn't do that last time this happened so I just left my phone alone. I went to my meeting for 30 mins and when I got back the phone was off. Those were the EXACT same steps that happened last time.

Recap:

- Full night's charge
- Turned to silent
- Left phone alone when meeting reminder came up
- 30 mins later tried to take phone out of standby and wouldn't come up

Sidenotes:

- Swaying grass live wallpaper
- No downloads other than gmaps and some games

*** I emailed Samsung about this problem and everybody with this issue should do the same or it won't get addressed!!!

I've been experiencing this too.

However, I think I've partially figured this out. The random shutdowns appear to occur if the phone is allowed to sit idle for a period of time, like on a desk or table. If I keep the phone in my pants pocket, where it is slightly moved frequently, even if I am sitting at my desk, the phone does not randomly shut down. My guess is that the frequent slight movement keeps the gyros active which in turn keep the phone CPU active and thus the phone does not shut down. Samsung likely needs to change the default power profile for the device in order to fix this.

I've cross-posted this on the AT&T site (forums) and also emailed Samsung via the Galaxy site. Hopefully they'll have a fix soon.

Did everyone try to make sure the battery door is closed TIGHTLY? Also, when you take the battery out look at the metal contacts. Are they all even or is one bent/jacked up? It seems if you place the battery in backwards that messes up the contacts and that could be another reason. As far as changing the wallpaper I think its just a coincidence.

P.S. If you hit up Sammy on Twitter they will help you out. They sent me a new battery door.

Okay, so this series of unfortunate events seems to be the key for me. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning for the past 2 weeks I have gone through this routine above and at the same time everyday when I get back from my status meeting at work my phone is dead.

It HAS to have something to do with charging the phone or connecting the USB.

I think I've found a solution

I think I've found a solution, one that works for me anyway. YMMV. I have found that if I disable the display power saving mode (Settings->Sound and display->Power saving mode), then the problem does not occur. With that setting disabled (unchecked), I can leave my phone sitting idle on my desk for over an hour without it automatically shutting down. I was not able to do this yesterday before I found this setting. I'd be curious to know if this also works for anyone else besides myself.

(This was also cross-posted on the AT&T forums).

Nice! Let us know if this keeps working for you. Hopefully it will and Samsung can properly address the issue in an update along with the GPS problem. I REALLY hope they do fix this because this phone is freakin' sweet! I don't want to have to switch to something of a lesser android phone. They're few and far between on at&t anyways.
