Car Panel

I have the DHD and the Sensation, and have to say the car mode on the DHD is better than on the sensation, only because you have the option to open it yourself. I have found that once you purchase htc locations maps, or you still have the free version, if you select the car icon form locations you will get car panel. I have purchased locations, and I am just waiting for my htc sensation car upgrade kit to arrive, then I will be able to test it all out properly, until then yes car panel works and is there, but only if you purchase locations or have the free version. Have to admit though, having both copilot and locations, I would chose locations every time, loads quicker, updates quicker, maps are clearer, colours are better, all in all just better, also copilot western Europe is £60 htc locations western Europe is £29.

what is DHD?

as for an alternate car dock app besides car ultimate, car home (google), or car panel (htc), i am really enjoying the car mode of the "VLINGO" app. the only problem with it is that it doesnt auto launch. i havent yet figured out any way to do this automatically or shorten its launch method. once you open it from your apps list, you have to press the steering wheel to enter the car mode. they have some widgets and i hope it includes a car mode launch so i can skip the step of launchign the main app and clicking the carmod and just lunching it from the widget.

car ultimate looks too cheap for me although i like some features it has like speedometer and composs.

googles car home crashes on me but it has always been 1 of my favorites. very simple and clean.

car panel by htc has some nice icons and it looks clean too but i cant customize it.

vlingo is also clean and simple with nice colors but why its my favorite is because it has total voice controls. when its in car mode it has the standard layout of icons like all the others but you can either press the icons OR (my favorite part) say "HEY VLINGO", (to wake it up) then you say like CALL HOME and it calls home. i have not received an incorrect or failed voice command so it picks up my words great! does this with texting, directions, calls, and search.

i recommend you guys give it a try and maybe you will like it enough to find a way to launch it easier when dock. i havent had much time to sit in the car to try out methods that can launch it automatically but hope this post is useful.

EDIT:
i just found this on the vlingo website:

"Vlingo 2.0 offers a new feature called InCar Mode. Vlingo InCar allows you hands-free capabilities to call contacts, send text messages, check SMS and Emails, reply to the last message received and give directions to navigate on Google Maps.

Vlingo InCar also supports full Bluetooth capabilities as long as your Android device operates with OS 2.2. You can also select Vlingo InCar to start automatically whenever you are connected to Bluetooth. Please note that the headset MUST support A2DP in order to function correctly with Vlingo. Note that Vlingo InCar can also be used with Android OS 2.1 but it will not have full Bluetooth functionality.

For a detail description of the different capabilities that Vlingo in Car provides, please check the Settings Menu from Vlingo InCar."

How did you get Vlingo on your phone? It says it isn't supported for the sensation in the market.

You can download Vlingo from the Amazon Android Market.
It's not available for the Sensation on the Android market because there are some bugs with this device. It partially works on the Sensation so give it a try (it's free). I like it a lot and hope they get the Sensation problems ironed out.

Doesn't look like the newest version though. The one in the Android Market shows updated July 28th 2011. Amazon Market shows October 27 2010. I may be wrong or the dates may be wrong.

Can anyone figure out why I can't get the Google's car home to work. It's just not starting. Nor via the Car Mode app or by docking the phone. Instead the HTC locations is starting and if I uninstall it completely with Titanium Backup, then nothing starts when the phone is docked.

Right I'm gonna start trying custom roms for this tomorrow.

My £50 HTC car kit arrived today and frankly launching the default navigation instead of car panel or my copilot is gonna get right on my freakin tits.

Totally get what you guys are all saying!

I flashed InsertCoin ROM and everything is now working related to Car Home :)

Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e

Have the S490 Car Kit and plugged it in. The car came up (top of the phone), like it is supposed to but nothing else. So I downloaded the Car Panel that was posted earlier in this thread. Now I plug my Sensation in and the Car Panel automatically shows up. Only problem is when I have the navigation "ON" the phone gets REALLY REALLY hot!!! I called T-Mobil and they said that this "can be common." Yeah right. SO I called HTC and they immediately told me that this is NOT normal and that I have a defective phone and I need to get it replaced.

Can this be a result of the Car Panel installation? Since it was not there to begin with?
Anyone else happen to feel their Sensation after Navigation has been on for a while?
Is your getting hot to the touch "like you can fry eggs on it?"

Hi there,

I'm new to this phone and the whole android world, and i gotta say:

1- VERY disapointed that HTC/T-Mo Removed Car Home app. Seems nice and configurable. The removed the app and used nothing to replace-it.

2- My Sensation 4G has SO MANY of map-like applications that i get conffused: Places, Latitude, Google Maps, GPS Navigation and TeleNav GPS Navigatior. Can't find one called HTC Locations. Can't find any Car Home replacement

It's not a result of the software directly.
Things that make your phone hot:
Processor intensive tasks.
Quick drains on battery
Using the radio in the phone for gps
Using radio for data
Charging the battery
Having it in a warm environment

When you use the gps in your car, you are doing all of them at once.

I try and do things properly, so I would be listening to a podcast or mp3 as well. Haha...

You can try rebooting, sometime an app goes nuts and takes a lot of cpu time...

If the heat is excessive and often, might be the hardware, dud battery or the charger on the car kit is faulty. Try it without that and see if it still gets hot. Also check your car is only putting out 12volts (it might be up to 18v) but over that and you might have issue with the alternator on the car. Important you test it with engine off, AND while driving... (obviously someone else behind the wheel at the time)

Hope this helps..

Warmly, Marty

HTC have made it that way on new versions of sense. Sometimes it works if you uninstall or delete or freeze locations (there are three apk's in the set though.) or use "select other map for htc" from the market. First time you nav it asks, after that, auto google maps!

Marty,

Thank you SOOO much for the info. I just got a replacement phone and it has not gotten too hot as of yet. I still have yet to try the car dock.

I am afraid to download the HTC Car Panel and Circular Battery indicator to the phone at this time. Maybe after I test the phone for a bit. Either way I will post my results afterward.

Not a problem :) feel free to click the thanks button.

On more thought, from what you just said, your phone is obviously rooted, so another thing to think about is do you have the right combination of radio, ril, settings etc. If your phone is set up wrong, it might be for example, 'busting its nuts' keeping a lock on the gps or downloading data. This it gets hot.
You said all the right things though, (about waiting a bit) test it a bit, change one thing, and repeat.... The number of people who change 6 things and then never know what made a difference to what...

Marty
