Sorry but this just isn't enough information. And what worries me even more is that you're on Verizon, who often lock their bootloaders - and unless a bootloader unlock is available, you may not be able to root this way at all.
Heh, figures I'd get the a PITA for a phone, though I was able to root my previous Pantech Marauder even though the bootloader was locked (and remained locked after).

What other information do you need? The problem I'm having with every root solution so far is access to /data/ is denied...

... I've also been looking for tutorials on how to do a custom root, but apparently I'm not looking in the right places.

Edit: Okay, so I found out what blocks are what thanks to another thread, but now I'm stuck not being able to extract them. I'm going to keep looking for a way, though there may not be one that I'm capable of. Sigh.

Device and SD Card Encryption under CF-Auto-Root? Errors (Samsung Galaxy Tab 2)

Preface: I have no idea if this is particular to CF-Auto-Root. I did successfully encrypt the Device prior to rooting with CF-Auto-Root, so at its base my tablet and the stock ICS 4.0.3 O/S on it did support Device encryption.

On my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7", stock Android 4.0.3) I used CF-Auto-Root (EXCELLENT!). Now I'm trying to encrypt the SD Card, and it always returns "SD Card Encryption Error" within a few seconds. (And indeed thereafter I always get a Notification about "SD card encryption error" any time the SD card is mounted by the device). If I go back to Settings -> Security -> Encrypt SD card and select to decrypt the card (even though it's not really encrypted), then I can access the SD Card again - no damage was done (and no encryption either).

If I try to encrypt the Device, I get the black background with the large green outline android, and ... nothing. The green android on the black background just stays there. After the normal screen timeout, the screen goes completely blank; I tap the power button, get the usual unlock screen, see the green android again ... and, nothing. If I rotate the tablet, the android rotates. If I tap the power switch, I get the silent/ flightmode/ reboot/ turnoff menu. But nothing will get me back to the normal user interface, and it never finishes (I really think it never starts) encrypting.
Eventually (after more than a couple of hours) I give up, tap the power switch and select to reboot, and it comes back up fine, but not encrypted.

One of my main reasons for getting the newer device was to have encryption :-/
Is Encryption (Device, and SD Card) supported/ functional when CF-Auto-Root is in use on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (Android 4.0.3)?
How do I make it happen?

Thanks!

hello, I've updated mu new clean n7100 to 4.1.2 via odin with rom from samfirmware an I rooted it with cf autoroot. I did the triangle away an it "cleaned" the custom binary download to No but system status is now Custom. Did I do something wrong or this is how it suposed to be? I would like to have clean stock rom on my n7100 with root and no traceing of any modifications in case of any reclamation. I thought that this is the way, am I wrong or...?
thanks.

Can I lock Nexus 7 after rooting the machine?

Hi Chainfire,

Thank you for the tool. It works for my Nexus 7 3G. I have two questions: a) Can I lock Nexus 7 after rooting the machine? b) Can I update the OS (if there is some updater available) after rooting the machine? Thanks a lot.

Thanks so much!

Wow, I have waited for days because I have found the auto rootkit so hard to work with and even got the donated version to no avail- but this autoroot is indeed newb-proof- it was perfect.

I have a question- just like the iphone, in order to preserve this root status, should I hold off on all firmware updates so that the root doesn't get accidently patched?

Also as a random question, I have indeed obtained the "galaxy note2 toolkit" program, and was wondering when I will be using this program? After all, rooting was the main function I wanted done, nothing else really was needed in my case.

Thanks again.

I cannot get root on my GNex after JB OTA update

CF-Auto-Root is the root for "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock Samsung firmwares, and be the quickest and easiest way for your first root. In essence, it does nothing but install and enable SuperSU on your system, so apps can gain root access.

This thread serves as a central discussion and request thread for CF-Auto-Root. If you have questions about a specific CF-Auto-Root binary for a specific device, please go the relevant thread listed on the CF-Auto-Root homepage.

Donate
CF-Root and CF-Auto-Root have been available for many devices (over 50 different models !) and have clocked over 9 million downloads. This is not even counting custom ROMs that include CF-Root (non-Auto) kernels. Don't be a leech, buy me a beer (and use the "Thanks" button!). Imagine if every user had donated me $1...

What's installed
- SuperSU binary and APK
- Stock recovery (note that any other recovery you may have installed will be overwritten !)

What's the difference between CF-Auto-Root and CF-Root, and/or other root solutions ?
CF-Root (non-Auto) are manually built rooted kernels and/or flashables that usually provide more than "just root". CF-Auto-Root is built on an automated system that I am constantly improving that takes a stock recovery image and returns an automated rooting packages. These packages are designed to install and enable SuperSU on your device, so apps can gain root access, and nothing more.

The difference with many other rooting solutions is that those will often install a custom recovery for you (I am personally moving away from custom kernels and recoveries, for various reasons), while with CF-Auto-Root you will end up with a stock recovery again.

Not included - custom recovery
A custom recovery like CWM or TWRP is not included.

Not included - Triangle Away
Triangle Away can be used to reset the flash counter after installing CF-Root. The flash counter keeps track of how many custom firmwares you have flashed, as this voids warranty. (No idea what this about ? Read up on it, you will want to use this !)

Not included - adbd Insecure
As this CF-Root does not include a custom kernel, adb shell does not have root access by default (you can still get it by typing su inside the shell), nor is adb remount supported, nor will adb push and adb pull work on system files. adbd Insecure can be used to remedy this situation. (No idea what this is about ? Don't worry about it !)

So i have tried everyway that i can find to root my GNex (Verizon). I had root access but lost it after updating to JB. I used Galaxy Root Toolkit to root before and that's what i tried first. That did not work and when i tried this method i just got a message that said installation aborted. Any help would be greatly appreciated, i am rather new to all of this.

since im new to android i would like to know some information from u guys

From what i have read since now i haven't understood the difference between cf-root and cf-auto-root. Is it possible someone to clarify some basic questions to me?

1) When do we use cf-root and when cf-auto-root?
2) Do they need custom recovery files installed ?
3) Which one is recommended under what circumstances ?
4) I have read something about flash counters. Which one of the two methods messes up with them ?
5) I ve read something about locked boot loaders. Which one is not compatible with them and how can i determine if i have one on a stock non-rooted phone ?

BTW i own a galaxy s3 (GT-i9300 & Android version of 4.1.2) :):)

I know its a lot of questions im throwing here but i would appreciate any help that i could get.

Thank you.

SD Card: Format -> Encrypt, OK; but Device still no...

I copied off all of the data from my external SD Card, then formatted the card, and then I was able to encrypt the card.

But the Device encryption is still stuck as I originally described.
Nobody has any ideas?

Thanks.

how did u extract .tar.md5 file ?

Okay, I think I got it. I've extracted the files from the Stock ROM.

I've attached the boot.img and the recovery.img.

I'm still not sure what you mean by:
- The device needs to have (and use) separate kernel and recovery partitions

dear sir how did u extract the .tar.md5 file ? so far i have not been able to extract the rom file of my device downloaded from the reliable source.
please help me also to extract the said ROM/firmware file.
thanks and regards

Rename it to .tar, then WinRAR and such programs will open it.

recovery.img file of my GT-S6012

The the CF-Auto-Root project currently supports the following base boards:

- Samsung Exynos4
- Texas Instruments Omap4
- Qualcomm MSM8660

Other boards will probably be added soon. Currently only Samsung devices are supported, but I'm looking to expand into other devices soon as well.

To be able to make CF-Auto-Root for a device:

- The device needs to have (and use) separate kernel and recovery partitions
- The kernel and recovery format must be the boot.img standard (no zImage support)
- I need the recovery.img file, so post it in this thread if you need support for a new device :)

Extracting .tar.md5 file

Hello Chainfire,

First of all, let me extend my deepest gratitude for all your work over the years... it's truly great seeing someone so passionate and professional about their hobby! :)

Now that that's said, here's another request for root on the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini (I8190). I read your first post and tried to provide you with the recovery.img file, but I don't know how to extract it unfortunately.

I did search for how-tos, but only found instructions for extracting the recovery.img file from already rooted devices (running cat /proc/mtd gives back "file not found", of course)... which is pretty ironic, seeing how I required the file to gain root in the first place.
So, if anyone knows of a good tutorial please post it (or PM me); else, if I can provide anything else related to this model just say so and I'll try my best!

Best of luck!
Dear sholimar I had also the same problem , that extracting the downloaded firmware file .tar.md5. But when I redox loaded the file and tried to extract it on my laptop (instead of a desktop pc I had been trying again and again), it just extracted after I removed the .md5 extension. May be desktop pcs connected with non-secure LAN or WLAN hinders the extracting process in WinRar. I had just this experience so I thought to share it with u when I successfully extracted my firmware file. Thanks

Only Samsung-based Verizon devices have locked bootloaders at the moment

OTAs don't work at the moment when rooted. You can unroot from SuperSU settings.
Sir I bought the Samsung music duos gt-s6012 phone and this not locked with any service provider so I have sim-unlocked phone but I kindly can u confirm if my phone's boot loader would be LOCKED or UNLOCKED ?
Thanks in advance
