In addition to changing the text size, here is how to change the overall DPI on a non rooted Mi 9:

Settings - Additional Settings - Developer Options - Smallest Width

The default value is 392. Change it higher to make things smaller, change it lower to make things bigger.

I've got it set to 449 which is a nice change.

Note if you don't have Developer Options, you need to do this:

Settings - About Phone - MIUI Version (tap this 7 times)

Thanks, I'm rooted, but was just lately looking for a simple way to do that.
That's super simple, thanks for the tip ^^

I use poco launcher and it handles that pretty well (well at 440). Also, you can try to add more icons on a row to counter-balance
Maybe with another launcher it works better, you are right. With original launcher 5x6, if i set value under 392 icons become larger

Have you tried if you can boot into fastboot?? Then you could edit/change the DPI Settings in build.prop (/system/build.prop). There you need adding/modifying lower Value to the following line

"ro.sf.lcd_density= "
