Chrome Wakelock Killing Battery

Hi

My phone has been suffering from extreme battery depletion on and off for the last few weeks. Using Wakelock detector I've identified it as being AudioMix. Using trial and error I've found it is coming from Chrome. I don't use any sound when browsing Chrome but my suspicion is it might be adverts on some sites trying to use sound. A reboot stops it (as does disabling Chrome) but then it will happen again within a week. I've cleared the cache partition, no joy. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome, again no joy. I tried Greenify but it couldn't see Chrome (even ticking the "show all" box). I have found references to this problem on this and other forums but no solutions or none that I could replicate. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

My phone is a Moto E4 running Android 7.1.1. It is not rooted. My chrome version is 81.0.4044.117.

Thank you

NB

Simple answer: use a different browser. My flavor is Opera which is mature and stable. A bonus is the integrated ad blocker and VPN which work well. There are many others to choose from; best stick with reputable names for the best experience given your experience level and device characteristics. Good luck.

Thanks for this - you've pretty much anticipated my next question! I'm currently trying one last thing which is I rolled back all the updates on Chrome (so am using the pre-installed version) to see if it still happens. If it doesn't, the problem is one of the updates. If this fails though, I will look at other browsers. I just love that my bookmarks sync automatically between chrome on my laptop and phone but I guess that's the price I'll have to pay if necessary. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Opera (and most other major browsers) support bookmark/history/password/etc sync along with bookmark import from competing browsers. I typically use the same browser on all platforms for this very reason.
