For two of my Gmail accounts I'm using lots of filter rules (all so far defined within web GMail and most to do with deleting unwanted mails). Couple of Q's: is there a way to import these rules into FE? If not, if I define NEW rules in FE (but leave the OLD ones active in GMail) is there a difference in behaviour between messages that are handled by FE rules vs GMail rules? Thanks for looking into this.

You can't import the rules of Gmail, but you can use both rules types are the same time.

@M66B: I got my domain email transferred to Microsoft 365 just fine, I just choose Microsoft oauth in the account setup menu, to add it alongside Gmail. It looks like it uses the same username/password as before, independent of my main Microsoft account.

I'm wondering if you can explain this screenshot, though.

It shows a contacts folder with a bunch of random letters/#s as before. I had emailed some people but never saved them as contacts in my webmail.

There is a 2nd screenshot, but I won't upload it, due to it containing my full email address. Inside this folder were several messages.

All of them had the header:
Microsoft Exchange Server
Retrieval using the imap4 protocol failed for the following message: <insert random # here>

In the message body it says basically the same thing, but states that it hasn't been deleted, and that I might be able to view it through their webmail interface.

I've tried deleting this folder after moving the messages to the inbox. Your app acts as if the folder was deleted, but it reappears after refreshing.

Ideally I'd like to be able to view all messages from all my accounts from within your app. That was the main reason I bought the pro features. All other folders in this account and their contents appear to be fine.

Basically, the app shows folders and messages as they are on the email server. I can't tell why specific folders and/or messages are or are not on the email server. I can check the logging if you wish, if you can't me via here:

Should I upload the logs to a post on xda, or to your support site?

I think this is pretty insulting, also for the people who put effort into translating the app:

deswegen ist auch alles komplaett in deutsche Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit für das deutsche volk und nix weiter seid ihr zu dumm oder schafft ihr es nichal deitsche programme für das deutsche Volk zu erstellen. schwache leistung - 1 star

"That's why everything is completely in German unity and justice and freedom for the German people and nothing further are you too stupid or do you create it nichal German programs for the German people. poor performance"

Google says this review is not violating the Play store policies. WTF.

Mh, I can just tell you that this guy/girl/... is not even capable to write correct german spelling, so just let it go away....

PS: and reading this he for sure didn't spell it wrong on purpose
I have reported the review to Google in another way, but I am not letting this go. If Google allows reviews like this, I will pull the app from the Play store, because political comments like this are simply unacceptable.

OK, put a little differently, I want to know whether there's any functional difference between the two approaches.
I am not sure what you are asking, but for example, it doesn't matter if Gmail or the app removes a message. If you are asking about differences in features: the filter rules of Gmail are rather limited.

I also think that this "post" comes from a troll. I have reported it as spam.

@M66B: I honestly wouldn't think it's a bad thing if you removed the app from the Play Store....no more being tied down by Google's oftentimes senseless policies. Free yourself from the big bad G.

The downsides I can see from this are:
1. A smaller audience that will find your app
2. Less income for you
3. People that have unlocked pro features via Play Store won't be able to continue using them or unlock them in the future, and many will want a refund

I personally would be unaffected by such a move, since I unlocked via PayPal/email. If an app dev gives an alt way to unlock, I will usually take that route, instead of buying through Google.

I can't read German, so I can't tell what that review said. I'm sure you know how to differentiate between a review offering constructive criticism/honest feedback, vs a review which is just baseless, malicious, or false.

How was the call with Google today, Marcel?

Google was pretty friendly and cooperative and told me the favicons are indeed the problem, and it can/should be fixed by updating in the privacy policy to "disclose how your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares user data":

    Privacy Policy

All apps must post a privacy policy in both the designated field in Play Console and within the app itself. The privacy policy must, together with any in-app disclosures, comprehensively disclose how your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares user data, not limited by the data disclosed in the Data Safety section. This must include:
    • developer information and a privacy point of contact or a mechanism to submit inquiries
    • disclosing the types of personal and sensitive user data your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares; and any parties with which any personal or sensitive user data is shared
    • secure data handling procedures for personal and sensitive user data
    • the developer’s data retention and deletion policy
    • clear labeling as a privacy policy (e.g., listed as “privacy policy” in title)
The entity (e.g., developer, company) named in the app’s Google Play listing must appear in the privacy policy or the app must be named in the privacy policy. Apps that do not access any personal and sensitive user data must still submit a privacy policy.

Please make sure your privacy policy is available on an active URL (no PDFs) and is non-editable.

So, I have updated the privacy policy and added this new table:

    https://github.com/M66B/FairEmail/blob/master/PRIVACY.md#summary-of-shared-data

I am not sure if it covers everything, so feedback is more than welcome. @mkasimd maybe you can take a look?

Note that I have also enabled BIMI, Gravatars, Libravatars and favicons for the Play store version again.

The short term goal is to release a Play store test version (and associated GitHub version) and to get the update approved. I will think about the next steps after this has been accomplished. Given the huge number of supportive messages I received (much appreciated!) the project will be continued in some form in any case.

Version 1.1900 is available on GitHub now and in the Play store test program after Google's approval (which is the main goal of this release).

It is time for a new, modern, open source, privacy friendly email client for Android.

I have just released a first alpha version for feedback on the design and features.

    Not for production use yet!

Most of the stuff basically works, but be prepared for crashes and error notifications.

Safe email is a working name, but it is for several reasons not a convenient name, so suggestions for a name are welcome.

I have just released alpha version 0.15

    Changelog/download:
    https://github.com/M66B/open-source-email/releases

With a bit of luck the next version can be a beta version.

I am putting a lot of effort into this project, so thanks are appreciated.
