Hmm, that would explain why this happens and would even be consistent. And now, I cannot tell anymore if this was the reason for missing alerts for me. I'll try to test it.

However, this would not solve my problem.

Pinging @Ultramanoid - just in case you want to add something.

Using web browsers here, naked browser Pro and Firefox on android and Firefox on PC. Starting a few days ago I noticed a lag between the time a new post or activity was performed and when it was reflected in the indicator in the top bar of the webpage. Starting yesterday, when you and others mentioned it there seems to be a complete failure of notifications even in web browsers. Today I've been catching new replies by manually browsing threads and viewing list of watched threads. Just now there was a dynamic new post notification along with indicator at the top but I've not seen enough of that to say this is fixed.

Alerts stop from time to time

About every 6-8 weeks alerts for threads that should be watched just stop. The other threads continue to alert when there are changes. So far this happend especially for the following threads:

[APP][2.2+] MiXplorer v6.x Released (fully-featured file manager)

MiXplorer: Q&A and FAQ (User Manual)

Maybe this happens for threads with a lot of activity...

I'm using only (mobile) web browsers for xda-developers, so this might be different when using the app. But I've found a similar issue here:

Not much to add.

Same for me, I don't know if it happens regularly as in your case, but it's been a few times in the last few years, and I only use the web like you, Android or Linux.

I'm not logged in normally, I can log in daily or every few weeks / months, depends. Then I check notifications to see if there's anything new and unless it's been a long time, only the MiX threads have new posts -- the others I follow are pretty quiet.

But then every so often notifications just stop despite there being several pages of new posts.

Notifications restart, I think, once I've checked the thread directly.

You will only receive one notification (Alert/Email) of new replies You will not receive any further alerts about the thread until you have read the new messages.

If someone Quotes or Mentions you, you will receive additional alerts for those.
There may be some limits on those as well.

I've updated the Index a bit.

The problem is not that there are no 'further' notifications after an initial one, the problem is there are no notifications at all, that's what I meant by 'stop' ..

To be clear :

1. I'm up to date reading a thread, nothing new is posted, I log off.

2. People post in the thread, up to several pages worth.

3. I log in. There are no notifications, I assume there has been no activity in the thread. This is not the case. Unless I visit the thread I won't find out.

Is there any chance you got a notification, did not visit the thread, and went a long time getting no new notification because you had not visited the thread?

Not to speak for @Ultramanoid, but my impression is that we had the same issue.

There simply were no notifications.

In my case using exclusively web browsers, there was not even the red dot which typically appears near the user avatar in the of the page. After being away from the forums for several hours there were several threads each with a quantity of new posts which should have triggered at least (one or more) "red dot" notifications per thread but there were none (not even the first notification of ongoing new discussion).

During that period the only way to track posts was to repeatedly review the list of watched threads for any that were in bold and then manually go through them to review whatever new posts had accumulated.

Today it seems to be a bit better

No. I log in to check notifications and messages, not to visit threads. Notifications are shown with a very visible red badge. If there are notifications, I see what they are -- I visit the thread or read the message, if there aren't I log off.

Every few months I notice there are no new notifications, ever, after I log in. They have stopped. Since activity is quite high in MiX's thread, that's the one I check to confirm. It just happened a couple of days ago. Now they're working again.

I thought you were talking about e-mail notifications, as opposed to the bell icon at the top of the screen, which calls itself "alerts". What I asked still applies. I can imagine seeing the badge, expanding the list of alerts, reading them, and then failing to visit each thread (I don't care what mechanism you use, when you read a post you are visiting a thread; I believe it is the act of visiting a page of a thread that resets the "New" status of all posts on that page; I believe whatever clears that "New" flag is also what will count as you responding to the alert). Having expanded the alerts, you will no longer have the badge, and the formerly new alerts will no longer be highlighted as new. But since you haven't viewed the page containing the pertinent posts, you will not be eligible for a new alert in that category.

I went out of my way to eliminate e-mail notifications; I do not get an alert when someone posts in a watched thread. Maybe it really is treating you differently than it seems to be treating me. I was trying to describe what I thought was a plausible scenario explaining what you reported.

I don't use e-mail and barely have half a dozen threads that I watch of which only MiX's are very active and Bromite's, much slower. The others get a post every few weeks or months.

Example. When I have an "alert", I visit MiX's thread. I read, reply, log off. I log in, see alert, visit, read, reply, log off. Repeat.

Sometimes, I log in, there is no alert. I log off without opening anything ( not even the left side drawer, what for would I do that if there is nothing new ) or visiting anything. I log in, no alert, log off. Etc. Eventually I log in and visit the thread because it seems strange and indeed I find pages of posts, I was never alerted of posts, or replies, or quotes, or mentions.

Edit : This is not common for me, or a regular problem. But it's happened several times for no apparent reason. Since I was pinged I just came to comment. It's not really a problem, it's just annoying with MiX's development thread because when it happens it's hard to find the last post I read now several pages back.

If you don't believe it is possible that you ever fail to visit immediately upon seeing an alert, then I got nuthin'.

I use "new posts" -- when I click on the result for a thread, it (usually) takes me to the first "unread" post. Even when it fails to take me to the first unread post, there is a link to "first unread post" (not sure of the wording) near the top of the page.

It happened just now again.

I just logged in. I had alerts for three things :

1. Some liking my posts here in this thread.
2. Me reaching level X or something or other.
3. This reply of yours that I quote now and I came here to do so.

No other alerts. I checked the list of alerts after those, all things I had seen last time I logged in yesterday.

On a whim, I checked MiX's development thread for which I had no alert whatsoever and there's a whole new page of posts since yesterday when I last read it.

There you go.

Hi guys,
Lovely admins, is it possible to max the length of spoilers? :p It cuts words, especially in mobile xda app.

I don't know whether I have understood your issue correctly, but if you refresh the page, you may get the 'click to expand' message at the bottom of each message. In the alternative, use the Edit button to view the entire message.

I don't use the app but I have encountered this on browsers too and I think that they are here to stay. But it doesn't happen every time, only sometimes, atleast for me.

Hey 👋
I am referring to the box of the spoiler, with the blue letters inside at first screenshot, "the frame", which cut the words inside it.
I just wondering if that box-frame could be bigger somehow so the words can be visible.
Otherwise I will go with manually traditional ["hide] ["/hide]. 😛
Thanks for the reply 😊

Oh, that, there is some sort of restriction on the number of characters there, somewhere around 40. So if you reduce the number of characters to below 40, they would all appear. I think that is called a header like a title, which the devs of the XenForo must have thought need not be longer. Ofcourse usage varies with each user.

With the manual 'hide' you will not get the header at all, except "SPOILER". So use the header but with less characters. It is only a workaround, not a solution I know, but this is my 2c.

A member posted, the post includes a log file wrapped in a "spoiler" tag. Attempts to Reply to the post (using the web interface, in a browser -- for me, Naked Browser) cheerfully let me waste my time composing a reply, then, when I "Post reply", I "broke the Matrix".

I understand that there is no telling what character sequences were written to the log file, and it might have been preferable to upload the log file as an attachment, but after successfully allowing the original post, why is Xenforo suddenly so sensitive? The original post was tolerable, but wrapping it in a "quote" tag is just too much for the poor parser?

You beat me to it, I'm preparing a report about this and was going to post it in the RC thread first because this thread is supposedly for the app, although with with the app no longer being supported, then why not here as well. Thanks for planting the seed.

I'm not sure where to report site issues anymore, and pardon my irritation but if we are to expect people to properly quote posts and provide logs then those functions must work in the website. This regards the site in desktop web browser, not the app.

Why, when replying to this full post https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...y-featured-file-manager.1523691/post-88405833, did I get the increasingly annoyingly cutesy error about broken matrix?

Then, why after attempting to reply just to the first two lines of that post did the site report that something had to be entered as if there were less than three characters even though the text I was replying to was over three characters as was my reply.

I was able to post the same reply in a new post here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...y-featured-file-manager.1523691/post-88406081

Additionally, there were similar errors during the first attempt at reply to the full post when merely trying to toggle the coding, which might imply that the site is reacting to something in that log.

This occurred as a relatively new user without many posts, possibly working across a language barrier, submits good information only to have the site tank around that information, possibly around the very logging we crave. Is there any way to find out what is occurring there.

To reproduce: Try to reply to this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...y-featured-file-manager.1523691/post-88405833. To spare the MiXplorer thread of unneeded posts this can also be reproduced by initiating a reply then selecting all then pasting that in a new post somewhere else, then the same issue occurs when attempting to save the post

To @J.Michael's point, it's strange that the original post was accepted but almost any attempt to interact with it fails. Along those lines it's also strange that the initial post in question can be copied elsewhere in order to repeat the error. This might indicate an issue with XDA's parsing of the threaded content.

IMO there are too many site discussion threads.
I suggest closing the first 2 or closing all and starting over.
and place a link to a bug thread in the

Wow, one of those I never even knew about. +1 to consolidating them and to your idea for organizing them. A possible consideration: would there be any merit to having separate threads for suggestions and for site issues? I like that in terms of organization but it might not be easy to channel the posts into their respective categories. EG one person's site issue might be another person's suggestion.

On 3/11/2021 at around 10am New York time, XDA will be upgrading our forum software to XenForo 2.2 which brings a bunch of new improvements, like a new thread preview tool, a Device Inventory tool to show off which phones you use, a most-thanked widget in every thread to easily spot the most important posts, plus a host of other new feature you can read about here. Not every feature of 2.2 will be available/active on XDA from day one, but we'll roll more things out soon as we settle in.

Please use this thread to post about bugs, issues, or overall comments. If reporting a bug or issue, be sure to tell us about your configuration (device, browser, OS) and the steps to reproduce the issue. Screenshots help!

In addition, later today we'll be updating the XDA app to work with 2.2. :cowboy:

    Known Bugs/Regressions:
    1. Advanced forum user max title length is too short, truncating them (e.g. "Senior Recognized Developer / Recognized Contribut"). Fixed 06/18 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...d-comments-here.4245677/page-16#post-85203961
    2. Long forum names are truncated (e.g. "Android Software and Hacking General [Developers O").
    3. Thanks/Likes counts are reduced for most users, sometimes dramatically, seemingly from Aug 29 - Dec 2; possibly related to posts reverting to older versions.
    4. Various old forum emojis aren't mapped to new unicode ones, and ones in old posts that do exist (e.g. :cowboy:) don't display.
    5. Broken redirects from old links for many threads/posts.
    6. Disabling Alert in Preferences forces Mobile App Push enabled, one should be able to disable both.
    7. "Unfurl"ed URL links to posts sometimes show a preview of the OP instead of the correct post (e.g. [URL unfurl="true"]https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/post-84073623[/URL]

    8. Missing colored/underlined user names to denote advanced forum users (e.g. Moderators/Admins and Recognized Contributors/Themers/Developers). Fixed 12/14 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...d-comments-here.4245677/page-28#post-86097881
    9. Posts containing only quotes and no new text shouldn't be allowed.
    10. Ability to subscribe to an entire forum is missing for some forums.
    11. XDA Wiki pages are missing.
    12. [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] functionality is broken and pics lost.
    13. Shell scripts are detected and rejected as attachments, even if renamed as .txt files.
    14. Search "this category" option never shows any results when used.
    15. Recognized Developers can't moderate their own threads anymore.
    16. Missing/broken legacy devices in Device Inventory (e.g. Galaxy Nexus is listed when you search but fails when you attempt to add it).
    17. Missing setting to receive emails for mentions and/or quotes.
    18. Reaction Score doesn't match between profile and "All" under Reactions Received.
    19. DevDB secondary thread contributors have completely lost access to updating these threads.

Truncated special titles appear to be getting fixed today! 🙌
Yay, not that I want to send me flowers but I send flowers to myself still 😜, there were 66 accounts to manually edit and then inform members about this change. Yea there were not other solutions than doing it manually.... 😭

I'm happy to have contributed to this and make disappear the truncated tiles. We have 50 char maximum allowed for it so it was not easy to find a good and consistent compromise for everyone and every case.

BTW, no one forced me, I was fine to volunteer for this task.

Can you please add .tar.gz, .tgz, .tar.xz, .txz, etc. to the accepted attachment extension list? I'm trying to upload AIK-Linux v3.8 here and this is a bit of an annoying last minute snag. :p

Please also look into allowing uploading simple shell scripts again. These used to be allowed at least when renamed to .sh.txt but currently they still get detected and blocked.

This is a developers and power users forum, you would think these things would already be allowed! :)
    (y)I have added those extenstions.
