My question was
- if I could flash the firmware without re-flashing the OS, since I am already on Lineage 15.1 (unofficial) and it's working well for me
- if there was a way to check what firmware is currently installed

It doesn't require to reflash the Os.

This is small Firmware zip which is flashed and stored in separate firmware partition.
It doesnt affect OS or data.

Its 50mb zip file which updates ur modem, baseband, camera, firmware and bootloader.

It has nothing to do with reflashing OS and reinstalling or formatting anything.

Just go to twrp and flash it and reboot. No OS is changed.

Perfect, thanks for confirming this. I flashed it already.
I was asking because the instructions at the beginning of the thread say something like
"-Reboot to TWRP recovery ( latest TWRP by TheStrix recommended)
-Flash firmware
-Factory reset (data, cache and dalvik-cache)
-Flash your favorite Marshmallow or Nougat ROM
"
Thanks again.
