Could you (or anybody else) please confirm that the following are working on CN rom ?
- Google Play + payments
- Banking apps
- Microsoft apps
- Netflix
- VPN
- Google sync (contacts)

So basically "Moto X40" would be the same thing as "Motorola Edge 40 Pro", right?
I am using all, except VPN, and all works for me.

Hi all, a question for the language, if i buy an x40 now, the chinese rom has only china+eng or there's a way to add other languages?

You can use the MoreLocal2 App and some fastboot commands to change the language. But after a restart everything returns to stock settings (English).
But don't be afraid, it's really really easy to do. Just Google a guide

Hi,

I got an X40 last week with the China ROM and I intially has trouble getting Google Play Services going on it, but got there in the end by using the Moto Mover to copy my data from a Moto G82. I had to reinstall a few apps but all was good except for Google Assistant would need to be deslected/reselected as default Digital Assistant after each restart, and gmail stopped pulling mail and notifying.

So I thought I'd try starting again with a factory reset. Now I can't get Google Play Services to connect. I get
'Checking info...'
then...
'Couldn't sign in. There was a problem communicating with Google Play Services.'

I've tried deleting cache data, checking, permissions, date/time, different networks, restarting etc and that doesn't help. I also tried doing the Moto Mover data copy again, but now that doesn't seem fix the issue let me run anything Google. Frustrating as I did have it almost perfect.

Any ideas? I didn't see anyone else mention this particular issue with the Chinese ROM? I'm using this in New Zealand.

I'm tempted to try the EU ROM if I can't connect to Google but I'm not totally new to this and from the posts it seems that there are mistakes to be made, and different approaches with different consequnences!

Now that some time has passed,, could someone please provide a link the the latest official EU ROM that is tested to be working without too many issues, and provide a brief instruction of the best/safest way to go about installing it, e.g. what exactly to do and not to do?

Thanks

No don't recommend stay on the chinese version, no reason at all to converting to EU version

I had the same issue what fixed this for me is factory resetting your phone again and then enable the google play services in settings first, then as last step install google play store apk (you can download it from your browser). It's important installing google play apk as last step otherwise you'll have this "There was a problem communicating with Google Play Services.'" error and there will be no way to fix it unless you completely factory reset the phone.

Thanks Jody2k! I actually tried following your instructions several times without luck. Also tried installing the lastest Google Play Services via APK first before everything, without luck. I also noticed that Google Services kept getting hidden/disabled from the (main) Settings menu, and from the Apps list. Also Play uninstalled after restarting, and was wondering if it might be due to the phone now having the latest April Chinese ROM version, rather than the shipped one I originally set up on. I was about to check the updates when I found an additional Google Play Services option in Settings > System > I clicked this and the phone blacked out for a minute or two, then all was working!!! :)

(y)SOLUTION: Looks like just choosing to 'Enable Google Play Services' is not enough, you also got to also select it in Settings > System > Google Play Services (On). Maybe this is stupidly obvious? But was new to me, so hope it helps someone else positing here.

Now to reinstall everything again and hope that my other pre-reset Google issues will be resolved! Cheers

Sadly the two issues I had noticed are still present using CN ROM, even after factory reset and fresh install of the basic Google apps.
  1. Notification and gmail sync speed is slow. Notifications that would appear on other devices virutally immediately take about 3-5 minutes to come through. Even if I open up gmail and look I need to swipe to refresh to see new email. Then funnyly enough if I don't open the email and go away the notification for that email will come through 5 minutes later (even though it is already landed in the app after manual refresh! Have just testing Yahoo and notifications are slow too (but not as bad as Gmail). Occasioanly they seem to come thorugh faster when I pick up the phone to unlock, but not alaways. Feels like they are getting routed through some Chinese goverment department for manual approval before sending them through!
  2. Google Assistant asks to be set as the default assistant (which is is already) and I have to select None, then Google again to set before it works. Then after restart I have to do this again. Also when I go to the Hey Google/Voice match, the switch is greyed out and says it is not currently available on this device.
Could someone else on the lastet CN update please confirm if you are also having these issues? Or any suggestions to fix the above. I've tried the usual updates, clearing cache data etc. Every other Moto phone I've used has just worked so this is very frustrating. Can live without the Assistant, but slow notifications just sucks. Not sure if I should just try and sell it, or try the EU ROM to see if that is better?

Thanks

Sadly yes i'm experiencing the same issues with the CN rom, EU rom won't be much different my guess but I haven't test it myself. Motorola beeing motorola I guess, their firmware is known to be mediocre at it's best, the notification and sync issues also have the same issues on other models. Not even talking about the issues you can have when you try to unlock and re-lock the bootloader, impossible to unlock it again and high risk to brick your device.

One thing is for sure i'll avoid motorola in future imo it's not worth the saving in costs, better off with buying a more expensive samsung or google phone in the long run.

That's annoying to hear it's not just me. I've been using a cheap Moto G82 with a local Asia Pacific firmware on Android 12 and the notifications a along with the other software is perfect. Much better than the Samsung UI.

Can anyone using EU ROM please test your notification sync speed? Thanks!

I'm running the EU ROM after doing the full conversation, everything for me works perfectly fine. No delayed texts or emails. You're getting the delay from what I assume is very intense battery monitoring which is common with China ROMs. I say the conversion is worth it, mostly cause I hate the China ROM bloat and the issues with play services that crop up.

You're using a device not made for the market you're currently in, of course you'll have issues lol. If you don't want the issues that come with the Chinese ROM then flash the EU ROM.

Thanks for confirming. I did play around with the Gmail battery opt settings and got those coming through quickly now, but Yahoo for example was still slow, so would need to check other important notifications. But still may convert to EU this weekend.

Did you follow the exact same steps as per this guide? Thanks.

That's the guide I used, yes. I didn't end up using that moto flash software that the guide recommended, I just used lolinet's flashing tool.

Thanks. I followed that guide last night including the Moto Flash tool. All worked flawlessly. It was so refreshing to see the non-Chinese welcome screen and painless Google setup!

The EU ROM does solve all of the issues I was having with the Chinese version. Everything I use works perfectly and feels very much like a Motorola now. I also keep noticing many subtle improvements, features and even the responsiveness overall feels slightly better. Highly recommend the conversion to an Edge 40 Pro!

    i didn't get the 43.20.28-2 yet

However looks like some other users are already running never versions which i am not able to receive since i am still on april security patch
By now it's pretty clear that Motorola OTA roll out is flawed, and not just as they keep saying in Lenovo support forum to be a staged roll out with different groups of users at one time. I think it's rather that their OTA backend is poorly designed and that there is lots of randomness.

I would advise the following to everyone that converts, or is looking for how to get OTA:

    - Don't convert to/use RETEU, but go for RETUS. It's more cared for by Motorola, receives more updates (and quicker, including for security patch levels) and more stable, including for the ROM scene if you want to go with it in the future. RETUS will work globally with all carriers (also in Europe)

In perspective, RETEU T1TR33.43-20-28-2 (the one @y17ousef and @eemilv can't seem to get in OTA app) includes the July 2023 security update. T1TR33.43-20-28 (without the -2) is old asf and still on the April 2023 security update, as well that it ships numerous bugs like missing VPN capability, the known 'VPN dialog/settings entry not working'. To imagine that due to the roll out issues, many users are still stuck even with that major bug. RETEU (Edge 40 Pro variant) suffered a lack of priority and care from Motorola for long, not receiving any updates until Lenovo forum users finally got them to release the July update -2, while X40 (RETCN) and Edge+ 2023 (RETUS) are structurally treated with a better update policy. In contrast, RETUS T1TRS33.43-48-35 is August 2023 security update and of course there are numerous reasons why people are looking to convert Chinese X40 (RETCN) to global to begin with so we're not here to talk about the usability of its counterpart RETCN T1TR33.4-30-77 (also August 2023 security update)

So, it's clear how i back up that RETUS is better for everyone, on global devices. Now comes the practical part: those that were converting their device from china to global, by guides like this, were already unlocking bootloader and flashing the different variant firmware to do so. They just need to settle for RETUS versions. Anyone else that is simply frustrated with the bad OTA and hampered roll out (they can't seem to get it in OTA app) i recommend to unlock their bootloader and manually flash the latest RETUS. There is a possibility that due to its general better care with software policy, and being more stable than RETEU, that once you converted to RETUS (from RETEU or RETCN) you will face less problems to get the updates to show up in OTA app in a timely manner (even though experiences from users like this one at Lenovo forums is less than hopeful), but i would advise to just keep manually updating (flashing) anyways. It corroborates the randomness that comes with a poorly designed OTA backend that i mentioned i think is present in the beginning. So, if you are egilible and offered the update, it can even disappear indefinitely.

    To get to the point
For anyone enticed to make the move to RETUS, the latest version T1TRS33.43-48-35 isn't available on lolinet yet, but after almost a week this link that was uncovered here is still working: https://moto-rsd-prod-secure.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/RTWO_G_T1TR33.43-48-35_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_cid50_CFC.xml.zip?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAS37TSJMJY5VTZC6O&Expires=1696240546&Signature=z+KiP39ALZkJlbMZM90rma94X3w= and may be permanent after all. If it's not, i will add a re-upload on Google Drive later.

I hope someone with better knowledge could clarify the current situation.
I did my best, it's not easy to punch through all the ** caused by Motorola's poor updates program

Also, last thing ill mention is that instead of depending on the OTA app's randomness in offering the correct update or not, "Lenovo Rescue and Smart Assistant (RSA)", a Windows PC program, should be able to install the latest version forcibly in Rescue mode, but the downside is that in the process it factory resets the device, and only offers the latest update for your phone's variant, so if this makes you stick to RETEU you can't get August 2023 security update yet, and so on.

Edit: if you'd like to convert to RETUS by that program without using manual flash instructions (or ever lolinet), all you gotta do is let Lenovo Rescue and Smart Assistant download the latest ROM for your own variant (yes, the firmware you'd like to convert away from) and when it's done downloading, close the download progress window and go to the DL cache folder that defaults to be within C:/ProgramData/RSA, find the download cache for the ROM package, delete all contents from the folder that has "CFC.xml" at the end, and extract the contents (e.g from the OTA zip package, like from the captured link above) of your desired ROM variant into that folder, without renaming it to how it's really called. Now hit Rescue (it begins flashing) in the program, you've just tricked it into thinking it's flashing what was initially ordered, this way you're using Motorola internal flashing tools to switch to ROM & fw you desire, without its RETCN, RETEU, RETUS detection deciding what it flashes. The simple truth is that it flashes whatever is in the download cache folder, without integrity checks, and i hope this won't ever be changed.
    2
Good news. Finally getting OTA to latest security update on RETEU and locked bootloader. Now VPN is working as intended and and OEM is unlockable again.

    Hi,
after question on lenovo forum, here is my installation guide.

    Warning:
I dont know what happen if you relock the bootloader after flashing, so dont relock it.
There will be no OTA updates, software update chanel is still retcn.

Every part of this instruction is done at your own risk!

    Pro:

5G is now working for me in Germany
    Multi-language

    Requirements:

    Install:
    1. Download ROM and flashfile and extract both in one folder
    2. Unlock Bootloader
    3. Boot phone in Bootloader (power off phone and start with power on + volume down)
    4. run flashfile.bat
    3
    Update:
Found someone on Telegram who unlocked flashing for my device again. After flashing back to the CN Rom, security options didn't work for me. The system freezed after setting up a PIN. So i flashed the RETEU 43-20-15 and boom everything works again. Safetynet passed, hardware backed and cts profile matched. Device is also certified now and everything works flawlessly! Do not flash the Firmware in this guide. It's a test Firmware where you will not be able to get safetynet passed and no OTA Updates for it! The only thing that doesn't work for now is VPN, but that's a bug. Motorola is going to fix that.

If you are going to flash, use the Firmware on lolinet as mentioned before.

Have you sold already the X40? If 5G works on X40 , which one do you recommend? Oneplus11 or Motor x40? I have a same concern to loosing the safety net pass, and far as I know, the Edge 40 pro has 1-NanoSIM and 1-eSIM I am afraid to loosing the second SIM...
In my opinion Moto edge 40 pro is far better than op11 which I have now. But unfortunately I only paid 600£ for the global op11 and Moto is 800£, as the don't give any discounts. X40 is on AliExpress tho for 480£ so I might sell my op 11 and buy x40 and install global Rom, if there aren't any issues
    2
thanks! is everything working now for you? has the PIN issue ever popped up again?
I ended up relocking bootloader(dangerous yes but I take the risk) because of my banking apps, after that device works perfectly, and pass safetynet and also is certified. And my update channel it's reteu also. Now have to wait for OTA.

The pin situation was that I have to force power off some times and ended up enrolling a fingerprint, but after that no more issues pin related or unlock

    Now I'm really happy!!

And the option to open bootloader it's greyed out, but maybe after 7 days it will be available again, anyway I hope never need do it again!!

NFC theoretical works, but I dont like to pay with my phone. Tested reading tags with NFC tools and that was working ok.
