Could you recommend the Lumia 800?

Would you mind to enlighten me?

@oskariunit: By the way: The alphabet in the contact list is nice but also has the bug that the first tap onto a letter does not open the alphabet-list if you have been scrolling the contact list before. Probably the first tap just sets to focus to the button and the second tap registers. One tap suffices if you open contacts and directly tap onto a letter without scrolling before, as the default focus is obviously on those letters.
And no, this is not user dumbness but a bug.
I don't have that bug at all. I can open the contact list and start scrolling. Then press a letter and the list pops up straight away.

From my experience, this bug exists throughout the entire OS. Sometimes a tap will only highlight the item but will not perform any action. Only a second tap will invoke the action. It happens in the browser, contacts, games, everywhere.

But I don't find it to be annoying enough to complain about it because it does not happen every time.

Hi,

after using a Lumia 800 for a couple of weeks, here's my two cents:

I have gone through all iPhone-Generations (and some symbian-stuff before) and currently own a bunch of current phones, among them the SGS2 (custom firmware, admittedly) and an Lumia 800. My company is developing apps, that's why I get to play around with smartphones a lot.

The Lumia 800 is hands down one of the best looking phones around. The size is perfect and it feels just right. I also dig the responsiveness of the user interface and I really like the approach of smart tiles in Windows Phone. Not as cluttered as android widgets and much smarter than the iOS counterpart (there is no such concept).

Unfortunately, there are a lot of real show stoppers that make me pick up my SGS2 in the morning, instead of the Lumia. Let's start with basics like calendaring and e-mails. Handling of calendar invitations does not work most of the time, the phone does not even handle .ics-files, which makes me pin down invitations, then go to the calendar and create a new entry manually - c'mon, this is basic stuff!
If you are setting up Google Mail on the phone, you will see only the first level of tags (a.k.a IMAP-folders). If a tag has sub-tags, it won't be displayed in the list, making the whole concept useless - bummer.

Syncing your contacts with google works in such a way that all your contacts do actually appear on the phone - except for random phone numbers that just will not be synchronized. If you really want to have all your contacts' phone numbers on the Lumia you better go through all those contacts and make sure the phone numbers are labeled in a way the Lumia can understand. I am not sure which labels work reliably. Updating all contacts just for a bug like this really is a tedious task!

The integration of facebook is pretty well done, unless you have a name that is so common that there are other people you know on facebook that have the same name. In this case, messages and profile pictures of the other people of your name are displayed as _your_ messages and profile pictures. Guess some developer decided to ditch unique IDs and go for names instead - another bug!

Talking about bugs: most apps that I really got used to on other platforms are sub par or not available at all on Windows Phone. Remember The Milk, evernote, spotify, rdio or even facebook - those apps are in no way comparable to their counterparts on iOS or Android in terms of features and stability.

And then there are a lot of other, small things:
- No tethering (ok, this is supposed to come in a future update)
- no image scale-down possible when sending via e-mail
- mute does not mute all sounds
- no ABC-bar in contacts list, you have to search or scroll a thousand times to find a contact
- Marketplace is slow and often inresponsive. Is there a way to list the apps I have bought? I have not found such an option
- battery runtime: though much better after last update, it is still tough to get through an entire day
- Once you install many apps (like I do) you will start to miss folders or other means to organize your smart tiles and the application list - a general problem of Windows Phone.

I have to admit that some of the trouble is certainly due to the fact that I use google services instead of Exchange, which might yield a better experience on Windows Phone. Then again, this phones' target audience is more likely to use free google services than Exchange.

That being said, I still like the phone, but it has way to many quirks to be a reliable business phone. I really hope Nokia and Microsoft get these wrinkles straightened out because the interface surely has a lot of potential.

Until then I will stick to my ugly Android that gets the job done ;-)

Cheers,
Dan
You sir need to realise, in life, nothing is perfect, everything is subject to differences. As much I hated the bugs in this phone, the phone has been listed one of my favourite simple phone since the Samsung G600.

As I said,I also like the phone. You just have to find out if you can live with the shortcomings. Every phone has its flaws...

Cheers,
Dan

I have heard a mixed bag of reviews about this phone but what I gather is most bugs are no ironed out. I have a SGS2 at the moment, but its to big and I never really was a big android fan and well iOS is looking very dated, I love the look of the Lumia 800. Could you recommend it?

I'd say that GS2 is true masterpiece next to Lumia 800.

Why would you make this downgrade?
GS2 is more advanced device (better camera, better and bigger screen and phone is still thinner and lighter than Lumia), not to mention, it's more functional (for example, it has working bluetooth).

Not now with ICS:D SGS2 is a good phone I am just bored with Android in general and fancy a change and really don't wanna go the Apple route.

Nokia has a working bluetooth… -_- I think you mean bluetooth file transfer, this is due to it being Windows OS. :p

I say you try it out at a store, or purchase it online, you have rights to return it if you're not happy with it. Simples. ;)

Same here. Coming from a SGS2. I have just purchased an unlocked lumia 800 after a play in the Vodafone shop.
I can't wait to receive it and have a good play!

Thank you Captain Obvious.
You sound exactly like that Nokia salesperson, Tomi Ahonen talks about here:
What about Bluetooth. The sales guy in the store assured that this phone has Bluetooth. And yes it does. And then after an hour or two of struggling with the brand new Lumia, its Bluetooth simply refusing to transfer files, the owner reads through the fine print in the user's manual, and discovers - to utter dismay - that the Bluetooth function only allows a wireless headphone to be used, but will not do Bluetooth File Transfer!

What moron at Nokia approved this crippling of a standard Nokia feature that goes back more than a decade! Of course it was not a decision made at Nokia, it is a Microsoft decision, common to all Windows Phone handsets. Again its those incompetent American designers who don't understand global consumers. Bluetooth is the most used data transfer method in many countries

Ouch! Have I somehow managed to hit a nerve? Chill out Lucifer, I was only stating the obvious, to an obvious matter. By the way, just for strange people like yourself who still use the old Bluetooth transfer, it's history, it's why we have the Dropbox, iCloud and Skydrive…….OTA file transfer Woooow! Oh I'm sorry, was that a little too obvious too. -_-

Indeed people are crying out after never used features.

And GS2 is utter **** compared to lumia. Sound quality of the calls and music is plainly put: ****. Can't even compare WP and android, WP just works.

Yes with android you can do what ever you want but if you want to just have a good non laggy phone, android isn't for you.

To be fair, when two friends get together and need to transfer a file, wireless file transfer (e.g. via Bluetooth) is still the most practical solution.

Why do smart phone user limit to cloud transfer of a local file? NFC support seems to be one of the development in WP8. Not everyone has unlimited data to have every simple task to have done over the cloud. Back to the topic, I shall not recommend any current WP. There is still a long way for WP to cope with Android and iPhone. My HTC Desire HD work fine and I do not feel any performance issue. My Lumia 800 also work fine but there are many area still behind those other 2.

No.
You're not stating obvious, you're just trolling.

I bought a Lumia over the weekend, I decided to buy the 710 for the reason the 800 was £300 and the 710 £150, I don't think an amoled screen and better camera are worth an extra £150, but so far I am impressed, everything just works like an iPhone, and Windows Phone just looks so good, The phone is the perfect size, I think 3.7 is the perfect size of screen, I love it.:D

Really tempted. Can these be developer unlocked?
if you buy from THECARPHONEWAREHOUSE ( As bad as they are with things like customer service and dealing with a assistant with the IQ of 10 ) get passed all that and the lumia 800 you get is already unlocked. and like all Nokia's its well built and when Microsoft get windows phone 8 in it you can laugh as loud as you like at all those with iphones and android phone that need 2 hands to use them. as for the lumia 800 one of the best phones i ever owned.... hope this helps

Tempted to say after owning the HTC G2, LG Viewty and LG Optimus 3D, the Lumia is one of the best phones I've had.
the battery life is amazing compared to the LG and everything just seems to work.
Really well.
Bluetooth is on as soon as you get in the car
WiFi on in the house straight away.
Miss some of the games sometimes but thats about it - most of the apps i used to have were to get over the limitations of the phone I had.

I'm really happy about it : D
