if you buy from THECARPHONEWAREHOUSE ( As bad as they are with things like customer service and dealing with a assistant with the IQ of 10 ) get passed all that and the lumia 800 you get is already unlocked.
He is asking about developer unlocked, not SIM unlocked.
I believe you can get a student dev unlock with the possibility of installing 3 homebrew apps.
Check Chevron and see if they've got unlocks available, if not then there nothing to do atm.

It just works.

No faffing around.

I get into my car and the bluetooth just connects.

I send texts and emails and it works.

I play games on it and its steady.

Its one of the best phones I've owned. I would recommend it to anyone.

It has small glitches, that I've never encountered myself - ill be holding on to it as long as possible.

Lumia 800, Was so impressed I gave it to the missus (it was blue) and then Ordered a Black 900 for myself, I am used to a big screen, Currently using a HTC Titan which of course is great but the Lumia I feel is so much Nicer and with Nokias Apps make it even more appealing, Nokia Drive is superb and free compared to other handset manufacturers offerings, Build quality is exceptional and Styling unique to Nokia, Lucky as I maybe I have had no issues mentioned before with weak battery etc as it seems the latest update has ironed them all out, I recommend the lumia but only if you have already tried Wp7 then you will notice how much nicer it is compared to the rest.:D

There will NOT be a Windows Phone 8 upgrade for the current phones! Microsoft have stated that only the current Apps will be supported by the new OS but NOT the current hardware!

Please provide your source proving that MSFT has made any claims as to what devices will, or will not, get upgraded to WP8.

A simple Google search would have given them but here are some:

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Paul-Thurrott-confirms-no-Windows-Phone-8-for-any-current-handsets_id29342

http://www.dailytech.com/Reports+No+Windows+Phone+8+Apollo+Upgrade+for+Nokia+Lumia+900+/article24524.htm

Don't get me wrong! I'm not trolling!
I'm too thinking of getting a Lumia 800 but this news is holding me off. After all Mango is a major upgrade for most windows phone devices. Windows phone 8 will have a different hardware specs (dual cores and HD screens) so it is likely for MS to not want to make the new OS suffer from the limitations of the old hardware! Current WP7.5 devices have really dated hardware in them and if you ask me Qualcomm SoC is the worst thing that can happen to a mobile device! (this I got from testing various devices and chipsets!)

Not to be in denial here, but Microsoft has not made any official statement as yet. So here's hoping for a miracle.

Nokia can't keep churning out phones with end-of-life OSes; Symbian, Meego and now Mango too?

Paul Thurnott is not speaking on behalf of MSFT. He's voicing his opinion. I've already ripped to shreds the bulk of his argument that WP8 devices require more powerful hardware than current devices.

I met someone at a dinner party last month who works for MSFT. This was before the Lumia 900 got released. I asked him if he'd been able to play with the phone and he said that Apollo ran really well on it.

It is a very bad marketing move to abandon up to 2 years worth of devices for a newer platform. It will break a lot of trust in the product and destabilize MSFT's standings. Of course, MSFT's silence is destabilizing thins, too.

MS announcement

I currently have a GS2. Im crazy about the idea of trying WP7, and why not do it on the sexiest phone ever (L800).

As many others im hoping that MS will update 7.5 to 8.

BUT.... As far as I know MS havent made one official statement at all about WP8 - do we even know its comming? do we know the name? or is it all just rumors? MS hasnt written anything on their website/blogs about WP8 only W8.

And think about this - since all sources are anonymous, do we know if its the same source supplying the news/rumors?

I cant imagine nokia+MS bailing on us with WP8 - that would be a dissaster for both companies, so lets keep our fingers crossed.

Im getting the L800 - if im not satisfied, or do not get WP8 ill still keep - I can use a decoration in my livingroom - amazing design.

At least they are professionals in that matter! :) (releasing products with EOL Software) (I hope this will remain as a joke and not reality)

I hope you are right but knowing Microsoft I'm not sure they will do the upgrade!
But then again... Let's prepare for the worst and hope for the best!
