I've run into an issue after flashing fndpena's zip. I'm not sure if it's a direct result but it seems to be. I'm running CM12.1 stable on Verizon Droid Turbo, and I flashed the zip in TWRP, and performed a dalvik cache wipe, and rebooted. My wifi connection has started acting up though. At times it tells me I'm connected to the wi-fi in the settings, but then it drops down to saved, or disconnects all together. The wifi connection icon never comes up in the status bar though. I've tried turning off/on wifi, forgetting the connection and reentering password, and rebooting phone. Any suggestions before I restore a TWRP backup?

Hi everyone, my issue is that when I'm the app it seems not to work my touchscreen I can't even go through the tutorial only the capacitive buttons work. I've been trying to install it from different threads or similar but I ALWAYS have the same issue :(

Pardon the dumb question: Why does a camera need root? And shouldn't the answer be included in the first post?
It IS in the first post. You didn't read it well. ;)

Read the part of the op post to which you are referring:
Prerequisites:
  • Rooted
  • TWRP Installed
"prerequisite" -- YOU /your phone needs root and TWRP to install this. The camera itself doesn't need root privileges once installed. Nothing is going to make SuperSu pop up and say the Moto Camera requests root access.

But it is a TWRP flashable file.

So, you cannot install it without root/TWRP custom recovery. THAT is all it says.

To be fair, what really matters is access to TWRP.

While an installation of TWRP suggests that you probably have root access (if you want it), does your OS really need to give the user root access in order to flash in recovery?

This guy's answer seems to agree with my thinking. That said, correct me if I'm wrong.

The guy's own answer shows why root is necessary:

No, it doesn't. It gives you read only access, so you can't overwrite files in the /system directory. Root can be used to make /system read-writeable.
Having root solves a lot of permissions issues on where to place system files for Motorola stock ROM app like this you are trying to replicate into a custom ROM. This isn't just a calculator app you are trying to install. It's the Moto Camera app + Moto gallery. It gets installed as system app. You need root for that.

(In Titanium Backup, system apps are in red and user apps are in white. This Motorola app is listed in red font in my Titanium Backup.)

Again, after installation, the camera is not going to ask for root privileges. But YOU need root privileges for the files to be installed where they need to be installed to work properly, to duplicate the same functionality as in the Moto stock ROM but still running CM.

Some people running CM actually turn off root after installation. I don't know why, but they do. They still have TWRP but turn off root. They would not be able to install this system app onto their phones. They would have turn root back on, at least temporarily.

Thus, the prerequisites for installing this Moto Camera via flashable TWRP file is TWRP and root. Just like the op says.

From post #1 of this thread:

Assuming you already have TWRP, take the attached zip file and flash it on TWRP thats all!

As you said, some users decide to turn off root (for reasons unknown to you). Even so, my impression is that TWRP continues to have root access to the device for as long as it is the device's recovery. This is a quick and dirty summary of the relevant parts of the link I provided.

The part that you quoted from is directly respondent to this question:
If I connect the phone to a PC then doesn't that give me access to the entire file system of the device? If so, then why can't I just overwrite the relevant parts of the FS with whatever ROM I want?

The reason he says that you need root to do that is because it's the access that the device's OS provides to the device that is attempting to read the device's filesystem.

Anyway, I acknowledge that this discussion is entirely academic at this point. I was wondering why the camera requires root. As it turns out, while your argument is that it does require root to install, it's clear that it doesn't require root at any point to use it. That's the answer.

The op doesn't say it needs root to run the camera. It says the prerequisite is TWRP and root to install. It's above "Installation". Then there's the Installation directions. It sort of seems you don't understand the word "Prerequisite"?

"a thing that is required as a prior condition for something else to happen or exist."

And I explained why -- because it's placing files in the system files space, not just the app space. It's replicating system files from the Motorola factory image.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I proudly present the new Moto Camera APK.
I did not rip it myself, it came from gammerson.
I have installed the APK and it runs beautifully on the turbo.
The play store restricts it to 2016 moto devices only, but it works on our phones anyways.
Download from here

I uninstalled the original moto camera before installing this one. Its recommended if you get problems installing apk

I'm on Resurrection Remix 5.6.9 and I didn't use any of the flashable zips. I had the camera installed from the play store, Baybutcher added in the moto stuff needed to enable the download. I uninstalled it before installing the camera I linked.
The one I linked Moto only is allowing downloads for the Moto G4 and Moto Z phones, but it works just fine on our phones

I see, I asked because I read somewhere that the new camera apk is incompatible with lollipop roms, I will try it later.
