No, you don't need "root", but a lot of people misuse that term when they are talking about installing a custom recovery (i.e., Clockworkmod). Yes, you do need to have a custom recovery installed in order to install CM.

To get a custom recovery on an Aria, you need to either have S-OFF on the device (Revolutionary) or use Unrevoked (which only works on Arias that haven't ever been updated to Froyo).
