That's lame if true, but it could always be possible that Verizon is only counting the amount of RAM that's actually usable for applications, rather than the whole amount. On the Epic 4G I believe only 325 MB of RAM is used for applications, and the rest is reserved for the system.

I think they are referring to 384mb that is usuable ram, since it's stated that there is 512mb total.

It definitely has 512 total. Maybe only 384 usable by eclair. Rest assure this will b just as awesome as the other galaxies. I've had D1, Dx DI, D2, Eris. And I'm using the captivate right now and it blows all of them away. Ill b taking back my captivate and getting the fascinate the day they are available BC att sucks ass. Tried them when my vzw ran out and that was a big mistake. U get what u pay for, and with Verizon that's the beat service in the united states. Can't wait for this phone

Whats confusing is all the material related to the device seems to explicitly state that the Fascinate DOES have less on-board ram.

Verizon is the only one who officially mentioned the RAM in the specs.

So it's very likely all the galaxy s phones have the same RAM size.

Are you planning on flipping to the Galaxy?
Yeah, Im pretty positive this will be my next personal device. I have confirmed it does indeed have less physical ram compared to the other Galaxy S phones. In spite of this, I will definitely be buying another one once it officially drops. I have been very happy with the fascinate the past couple days.

I'm a new user who is deeply interested in getting the samsung fascinate for verizon but i still have some doubts that maybe you could help me clear up.

A couple questions I would like answered if possible,

1.) You have confirmed it does have less physical ram, how was this? Are you sure its not 384RAM + 128OneDRAM = 512 total? Please go into detail if possible.

2.) "You have been very happy with the fascinate the past couple days" Does this mean you are currently testing it?

Thanks for any info!

Maybe it is all just a misunderstanding, and it really is just the formatted size, but they are pretty clear when they say 384 megs of ram, not 384 formatted. The other phones are mentioned as having 512. Its even said the fascinate is at a disadvantage. Look it up. I dont have anything to post and I am not a tester, no sorry. I meant ive been happy with its performance as a phone(Galaxy S) is all.

Look, lets settle this here. Look at the picture and it says 512mb flash/384mb RAM. Compare that to explanations of RAM for other phone products. That's 512mb flash RAM with 128 used by......... VIDEO. Every computer without a dedicated video card says the same thing. Go look up video cards with dedicated memory and video cards with shared memory. Obviously Sammy's video cpu uses 128k or RAM and they bundle that with the actual RAM of 384 to say 512. But all Galaxy S have only 384k of Ram to use.

I don't think Samsung has ever officially revealed how much RAM the PowerVR SGX 540 uses, but looks like the cat is out of the bag now. No wonder this Video card is such a beast. I wish i could put it in my laptop.

Ok well I want a fascinate so I looked into this issue. I have a friend with a captivate so I downloaded android system info from the market as well as android hardware info. When looking at the max ram available on the captivate, which is documented at 512, the max available ram was 325. If the fascinate has 384 then we are at an advantage. I'm happy will someone with access to a vibrant test this. I will screen cap and post pics

To the three posts above, THANK YOU SO MUCH. My god I have been waiting for a definitive answer the past week or so.

THANK YOU
hardware wise, these phones are nearly identical. While its possible they would screw with the RAM, it's not likely considering how tightly the O.S. it integrated into it. The only phone that had a significant part of its Structure changed was the EPIC, which for some odd reason will only have 1 gig of internal FAST STORAGE. I don't think this will be a killer for the unit, but still odd.

keep in mind too that the Fascinate is CDMA while the Vibrant and Captivate are GSM which are big hardware differences. Possibly one of the reasons why they have 16GB onboard memory and the Fascinate/Epic are only 2GB/1GB on board respectively.

That chart is from an official VZW training document. Trust me. ;) Thats not something droidlife whipped up, that came FROM samsung and vzw. Its about as official as you can get. Ive seen these before, and thats when I started this thread, not becuase of the phandroid post (I dont read phandroid). So now that these are finally out in the open, the internal Galaxy S comparison chart is what I have been referring to.
