I don't know what is so hard to understand about this.

it says 512MB ROM/384MB RAM.

ROM != RAM

Most likely, the 512MB ROM is where your OS and system files reside. And then the 384MB RAM is memory that the OS and your apps use.

Think of the ROM as you would the c:\ drive in your PC and the RAM as well, the memory in your PC. =)

Your O.S. could reside in either ROM or RAM. Most O.S.'s use RAM. ROM is typically used for firmware like that on video cards, bios, or even a dvd drive. I know that i've flashed the xbox 360 DVD ROM several times (that's how you hack it). On a smartphone, the O.S. resides on the ROM because it cannot be changed without a firmware flash update . Of course that same flashing is how we root/jailbreak our phones.

Hence why they call a new ROM a custom ROM.

ROM is typically faster and of course ideal to speed up an O.S. when the CPU may not be up to snuff (phones / ipad).
