I have a chromecast hooked up to a pretty old TV via HDMI. It's working perfectly and the TV tells med it's running at "720p, 60hz". My problem is that when I hook up my computer (nvidia gtx 960) via HDMI to the same TV I have to set it to 480p for the picture to be stable. At 720p it starts to flicker and go black on and off. I have tried many different resolutions with varying result. I don't understand why it works with chromecast and not with the computer, both at 720p.

That's why I was figuring if there is a way to tell at exactly what resolution the Chromecast is playing. Perhaps the Chromecast have determined an optimal resolution for the TV that I havn't yet tried with the computer. So is there a way to tell the exact resolution if I root my Chromecast?

Thank you

1280 X 720 60Hz is standard 720P.
If you look in your nvidia control panel (which is what you should be using) there should be an indicator of what the native resolution of the monitor is.
1280 X 720 or 1176 X 664.

Don't try to set resolution from Windows itself on an nVidia card.
You may also need to set desktop scaling if your monitor's bezel doesn't support underscan.
You should also do that in the nVidia control panel.

If you have that installed simply right click on the desktop and there should be a link to it in the menu.
