Did the US (Snapdragon I think) Note 8 ever get rooted?

I know about the SamFAIL thing, but I'm not sure I want to lose 20% of my battery life. I haven't updated my phone since I got it a year or two ago, so if a better root option ever came out I should be able to make use of it. If not, I guess I may as well finally let my phone update, right?
