Which "puppy" would that be? This thread refers to two different variants (m8_ul versus m8_wl) which also have different root methods.

For most M8 versions (m8_ul) root method is to unlock bootloader, flash custom recovery and flash SuperSU.
Sorry. I have m8wl. Verizon m8 variant

I ask you questions because you always answer. Know ya for a few years now...this is my dilemma...tried rooting with weaksauce while on 5.0...wouldnt work...tried kingroot...got temp root with kr, but I couldn't make supersume work. Now I am getting software modified in settings and in fastboot. Tried weaksauce2 and no dice... I went ahead and just ota'd until marshmallow....now I'm trying kingroot , still no success and am still getting this in fastboot details. See pic. How can I finish rooting? Probably with sunshine huh?

I tried replying to your previous post yesterday, but I think the XDA website went quirky and the post didn't "take".

Best root method on the Verizon version unfortunately is to use Sunshine app to get s-off, which costs $25. HTC patched against Weaksauce and its variants long ago (around 2014), so no point in trying to get those to work. I've seen very inconsistent results with kingroot. We've seen a lot of folks get stuck like you did, software modified with no root. And I'm not sure it ever worked all the well for the VZN version. I've found myself recommending against using kingroot, as it seems to cause more problems than it solves.

Even when I was on 5.0, ws didn't work. Must have worked for the very first 5.0 build.
