4. Use 7zip to add your patched boot.img to recovery.tar
(right click and choose add to archive and choose recovery.tar)
Do you mean the boot.img patched with Magisk?
I were able to root the phone, followed the OP instructions to flash the recovery.tar with 3 files (boot.img, recovery.img, vbmeta.img).
However the phone bootloops forever at Samsung boot logo.
I can't enter TWRP to go further.

After reading a lot more, even outside xda, I "suppose" that boot.img and vbmeta.img should come from the same firwmare file we download, i.e., we can't use other vbmeta.img suggested for download here. Am I right?

I follow that (for the second time). I run into the

If you get a DTBO error after updating Magisk, flash this vbmeta https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-do...iq90SDlmc/view
And flashed that vbmeta file into the AP slot with ODIN.

Phone booted and I got root. The problem was with TWRP.
While preparing the recovery.tar, you said we need to download another vbmeta
5. Download vbmeta.tar from here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...&postcount=237) and extract vbmeta.img

I'm now with the most recent firmware from 02-06-2020 (A205GUBS5ATA1). What files should I add into recovery.tar to get TWRP?

1. The boot image patched with Magisk Canary (other version does not show the options anymore): should I let the 3 options Keep AVB/Dm-verity, Keep Forced Encryption and Recovery Mode enabled?

2. Which vbmeta image should I use?
a) The 1st one from GDrive; b) The 2nd from xda; c) The one which is on my AP firmware (A205GUBS5ATA1); d) The one which is on my BL firmware

I tried to follow the instructions and using the 2nd one that you suggest to download from xda and bootlooped with the new firmware.

3) I'm using the TWRP here: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=1899786940962574261

Thank you for your support.

I did, I could reach a root device.
When I try to get TWRP, I got the error:

Recovery: Error validating footer (text under the notch)
CUSTOM RECOVERY
VBMETA A205GUBS5ATA1

I searched xda and tried to create other flashable file with vbmeta suggested by LietRell and others.
Each time, it bootloops on Samsung logo. Seems that something changed in the last firmware.
Do you think I should flash the firmware from November, 2019?

Sorry, but the instructions do NOT work with the latest firmware (SM-A205G A205GUBS5ATA1 A205GOWO5ATA1) and we can't go further the root process.
I followed all the steps 5-10 times, starting from scratch and they do not work (for me).
I have quite some experience on rooting/TWRP, but this Samsung device is really tricky.

Also, this info If u are getting vbmeta.img footer error when booting to twrp Then flash this vbmeta.tar via odin ap solt. does not work. I've tested with the file suggested and also with the one from the latest (BL) firmware. I've tested both the original vbmeta and also the one patched with Magisk (while patching the whole AP firmware file).

Maybe it worked for the older firware. Something changed from Samsung side.

Is your phone rooted?

By the way, for the record and help, the way to root I've found was:

Patching the boot.img (extracted from AP firmware) with Magisk (Canary) (and the patch options were remove dm-verity and via recovery, but allowing Persist Encrypt). Renamed the magisk-patched.img to boot.img and add it to boot.tar and flashed from Odin (AP slot).

Thanks
Added to my instructions.
Thank you. After installing the Magisk Canary apk, a further configuration is needed. Phone will restart automatically into Recovery. Just wipe cache/dalvik, as this is required after Magisk updates in any phone (although if you wipe data it won't harm the rooting process). Voilá. Rooted.

Installation Instructions.
There is never only one way to do anything. The following steps have worked for me.
Before you start, make sure you have rooted the A20
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/root-samsung-galaxy-a20-rooting-guide-t3954872

To install TWRP
1. Download the custom recovery from here
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=1899786940962574261
2. On the PC rename the unpatched recovery as recovery.img
3. Use 7zip to make it into recovery.tar
(right click and choose add to archive)
4. Use 7zip to add your patched boot.img to recovery.tar
(right click and choose add to archive and choose recovery.tar)
5. Download vbmeta.tar from here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80188834&postcount=237) and extract vbmeta.img
6. Use 7zip to add vbmeta.img to recovery.tar
(right click and choose add to archive and choose recovery.tar)
7. Install recovery.tar to ap slot using Odin.

If you are getting messages about being unable to flash the recovery try this.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80216465&postcount=276

To ensure that data is not encrypted so as to enable data to be backed up follow these steps
8. Boot the A20 into TWRP and mount everything that you can.
9. Format Data (not just wipe)
10. Flash this zip View attachment 4816260
11. Reboot into Recovery. It will reboot into download mode.
12. On the pc repeat step 7.
13. Reboot phone and re-enter all data.
14. Reboot into Recovery.
15. Backup boot, data & system
16. You can now restore boot, data & system from TWRP after any crash, but you may need to forget your wifi and go back in to it.

You can now move on to installing a new GSI ROM .
It you get stuck you can come back to Samsung by using your backup.
GSI ROMs are here.
