Does anyone have steps to update rooted WITHOUT having twrp installed?

I only have 3 magisk modules... Last time I updated with magisk modules I got boot looped until I reset my phone...

Last update I guess you could
---
Uninstall all magisk modules

Download update, install - DONT REBOOT

Goto magisk and install magisk (after OTA option)

Reboot

Profit?

---

Anyone know if this way will work again without bootloop?

I did it like that and didnt get a bootloop

The easiest way to upgrade a rooted Oneplus 7 Pro was posted by Adam Conway on the XDA Portal.
Only 4 steps are needed. I have updated my Oneplus 7 Pro 3 times this way, without any issues whatsoever:
install the OTA as usual (don’t reboot)
go back to the Magisk home page, select install, then select both direct install and install to the inactive slot.
reboot

This worked! I was worried with everyone saying each method failed. Thank you! Very easy!
If you do it like this and have twrp you will lose twrp.

Well of course, if you don't do step 2 (flash the regular TWRP installer zip like a Magisk module.) then you will lose twrp.
Was it intentional to leave it out in the quote?
When you do all 4 steps you will end up with a updated OxygenOS in the active slot and TWRP and Magisk in both slots.
But as pyry666 said, you don't really need twrp. (Even though I do prefer twrp instead of the stock recovery)

I've got Magisk without TWRP, and this latest update has messed something up as I'm no longer receiving push notifications.

I sent a Steam verification email and didn't receive it until I actually opened Gmail.

This is the problem. Everyone is filling this thread with misinformation which made me hesitant to do anything. That is incorrect. I had TWRP and had no issues because in the steps it says to flash it.

Everyone please stop spreading misinformation. Can a mod or someone please settle the huge discrepancy in what people think works on this phone. I have never seen such a discrepancy on an android phone before.

Well, for what it's worth - I have magisk modules and edexposed modules - didn't uninstall any - let Ota download full, install, thne before reboot do twrp a/b retention and flash magisk to other slot, then reboot. Am golden.

There are many ways to flash updates, each with a different set of steps that don't necessarily overlap. In my signature is a guide for flashing stock rom but with root.

Some people want TWRP even with a stock rom. Some people want to flash from TWRP. Some need to use fastboot. Some just stock.

I have multiple devices and test quiet a few of them for software :good:

Legitimate question
Why is OP using lz0 and not lz4 for compression?
From what I gathered lz4 is better all around, and seeing we have ample RAM, faster compression/decompress is favorable over compression ratio, why use zRAM at all on a 12GB system?
I know I can't compare my Linux system with Android but common knowledge is that if you know you aren't going to use up your RAM, disabling zRAM gets rid of some overhead, given we have OOM killer, we would never have an issue with no zRAM right?
Or does Android deal with it differently?

I don't believe stock uses this (correct me if I'm wrong)
But I've seen benchmarks that lz4 with latest patches is more efficient

On another note, I've noticed Google Play services completing nailing my GPS lately, everytime I go to unlock my phone notification says Google Play services is using location
Then disappears, BBS say google.android.location.ALARM_WAKEUP_ACTIVITY_DETECTION has had 1500 wakelocks , might be something to do with being in another country but what gives Google! Stop polling my location

When you go to settings in Play store app and scroll down, is your device showing up as certified in the play protect certification?
Are you rooted or completely stock? Have you updated Google play and the Google services?

For the record, I am on 9.5.11 with an unlocked bootloader, TWRP and Magisk and not only my device is certified but when I searched for OpenVPN app I could find it and install without problems.

As always, this OTA will be incremental. The OTA will reach a small percentage of users today, and we'll begin a broader rollout in a few days. Your feedback is appreciated. I may not always be able to respond to every comment in the forums, but please be assured that we take your comments and feedback seriously.

This OTA will have a staged rollout, the OTA will be received by a limited number of users today and will have a broader rollout in a few days after making sure there are no critical bugs,

    Some Recommendations

    Hi Everyone

For those who had doubts or didn't understand my last message, i would like to clarify few things as we move towards Android 10
When you get your hands on the release, i would like you to be aware of the below and backup your entire device. As its a big update and change of Android versions, please follow the below:

To begin with Clean flash is recommended and make sure you uninstall/remove all System Mods, Magisk Modules, Substratum overlays etc before you proceed. (Do Not report bugs on Dirty Flash) &/Or if you cant do a clean flash Factory reset is recommended from recovery after the update.

    1. OTA is build for stock devices with locked bootloaders so if you are unlocked or any mods, please use the full zip instead of incremental and definitely clear cache after the update :good:

    2. Back -up your internal (Data, Media everything that is important and not stored on cloud) :good:

    3. If you are unlocked and have TWRP, make sure you use one which is Android 10 compatible and can flash the beta's only then use that TWRP :good:

    4. If you face any lags or loops, factory reset after the update is recommended so again data backup is essential :fingers-crossed:

    5. Make sure you check and update play service and all app updates from playstore upon first boot so that any Android 10 related updates can be installed before you start using the device and report any force closures :fingers-crossed: Keep in mind that there are many apps which are still not Android 10 compatible so there can be some third party app issues.

    6. First boot will take longer than expected so be patient :good:

    7. Expect bugs as this will be the one of the early release for your device so there can be some broken functionalities :fingers-crossed:

Lastly for users who have OP7/7Pro as your primary or only device i would request you to hold the update for a day or two and check the feedback on the forums for any broken functionalities before you fall for the hype :p

Also .. users who are rocking the Open Beta's should be able to dirty flash the build however i still recommend a clean flash and start fresh to avoid any backward compatibility issues (Backup all before you start)

For those who follow me know that i posted a backup heads up as similar advise when we received Pie/Oreo update but some users did not take my advise seriously and ended up with loss of data and encryption issues and had to wipe the entire device so please take the necessary backup and backup all that you cant afford to loose. The last thing i want on this thread is reports of bricked devices and loss of data due to the update :fingers-crossed:

As i have said before feedback whether good or bad is extremely important to us, as it is only on the receipt of such information we can assess and improve the experience that we offer this i would like to thank all of you for your continued feedback on our Stable and Beta Builds and we look forward to more constructive feedback from our XDA community :highfive:

    Stay tuned :fingers-crossed:

PS: People on DP's clean flash and factory reset only // Dirty flash will bootloop

Its going to be a good weekend guys, please backup everything :)
