[Discussion] Android 4.1/5.0

This is inevitable. In a week's time, Google is going to release a new version of Android to compete with iOS 6. The million dollar question is: will the old and already underpowered back when it was launched Nexus S get an OFFICIAL update to Jelly Bean? I seriously doubt it. But there is hope. If it is a speed booster rather than a entirely new design and power hungry features, I think the Nexus S might get lucky. What do you guys think? Fingers crossed.

new os means a new nexus phone, so i doubt a new os is coming .. just a minor update if anything

Performance issues? I doubt it. Features don't necessarily mean slower though, better with ICSs built in data limiter/tracker than a 3rd party app for example. Depends on what they add though, of course.

Small chance we'll get it though. I'm leaning towards a fat no if it's released beyond August or so, before that and we may have a chance. Either way, we'll have rock solid ports within weeks, just like ICS. It amazed me how stable initial ports of ICS were before it was released officially, it was my daily driver (i believe i used eugenes). I have (blind?) faith in the same thing when JB is released.

I am 100% confident that there will be minimum visual changes. The dev team spend so much effort into making a guideline for Android app designs, they are most certainly not gonna ditch that. So that leaves us with one other major change Google can bring to the platform: speed improvements. Both app speeds and overall smoothness. If you check Google io app and the schedules in there, one of them is all about app smoothness and maintaining a constant frame rate. I am hoping that third party apps will be as smooth as the iOS counter parts within a few releases. But back to what this thread is about: I think NS is highly likely to get this update, since it runs ICS okay, but not as fast as some desired, (multi-tasking). So this update should be like froyo, not much visual, lots of under the hood changes, if NS can run ics, it can run jb.

I think it depends on how big the step in version-numbers will be. 4.1 - we'll get it. 5.0 - nope.
Jelly Bean has always been rumored to be 5.0, but latest news have it to be 4.1. (Benchmark logs of an upcoming android tablet)

Remember the nexus one - it started with 2.1 and went all the way to an official 2.3.6.

Think about it: it might be a new interface/design for a tablet, Android really need something solid if they want any chance of fighting iOS and windows RT.

Considering that it seems like RAM usage is going relatively well within ICS, i can't see any worry about that there. 1GB would've helped in any situation, not just moving toward JB which likely wouldn't make a difference. That's the main thing that could have held the NS back. I'm with you unless IO implies anything otherwise. I'm thinking alot more will have to do with dual and quad core setups than our NSs single, particularly with the idea of constant framerates in mind. I see how there isn't that much left to do in the same environment and considering how much effort was put into ICS little will change that's not well below what we see happening, and most of that relates directly to performance and basically making the UI smoother, prettier and maybe a touch more colourful.

I think that if it's more bloated and non-optimized, even less handsets could possibly get it then ICS. So I'm more positive NS will get it

Seeing as ICS was meant to be a unification of tablet/smartphone OS, I don't think they would release another tablet exclusive OS to tear that unity apart again. Also, if we're learning from the past here, the Nexus One got two updates before losing support so Jelly Bean should be the final update for the Nexus S.

Also, since ICS was a major interface revamp, I think Jelly Bean's gonna be focusing on other parts so really, Nexus S does not have any reason not to be able to support it. We'll see though

Seems that the new version will be like froyo / GB transition, more improvement, better visuals. Maybe our devices will get the update.

Yea I'd be happy with a few extra features like magel but the main thing for me is probably just speed and making things look a little nicer ..
I hope they call it 4.1 if it's a smallish update though otherwise will have the same issues iOS six had in that really is like 5.5

"all the way" is stretching it though. We got from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4. Much better than the Nexus One in that respect.

Agree with you here. Minor updates are usually pushed, major ones aren't necessarily. I think the only reason the Nexus S got ICS is that there would have been an outcry if we didn't. Seriously, a Google phone with absolutely no upgrade? That would have been ridiculous.
