It seems to me that this forum needs to separate the N7 2012 from the N7 2013 versions. I would like to find the best setup for my original N7 running Kitkat 4.4.4 which it does well. When I go to lollipop my device just doesn't like it at all.

I'm running 5.1.1 Chroma ROM w/ franco.kernel r82 on my 2012 Nexus its running flawlessly. Super smooth and excellent battery life. What are you comparing your current speeds too? It's a 3 year old tablet with out dated specs. It's only so much we can get out of it. IMO

I'm running Smoothrom V 5.3 (4.3.1) with leankernel which works very well on my N7.
I went back to this after trying DirtyUnicorns 5.1.1 and OrionLP 5.1.1 both of which drained the battery quickly and charged very slowly making the tablet practically unusable. As yet, I am unsure of the benefits of trying to make this old tablet work with Lollipop, although I do enjoy trying. I will give your setup a try and see how it works on mine. It's not so much the speed as overall useability and reliability with the s/w that I like to use. If it only works well with a certain browser, then it probably isn't for me.
I'll let you know what happens

the probleme with nexus 7 2013 is the location of USB and the headphones. The N7 2012 its easy to open and relocate the headphones and usb to the back of the device, and then its easy to hide all cables

I fix mine with magnetic iman and hide cables behind xD
check mine:
Fortunatly I don't need to hide the cables, it's done for me by way of a relocation kit.

How did you move the plugs, and how is it mounted to the dash?

If you just want Kit Kat AutoDroid is probably the ROM to go with. Lollipop performs much better with all the necessary apps and services removed but adding back in Music and Maps will bring the wakelocks back unless you get aggressive with apps to control them. My debloat list in the 2nd post is a good start. If Onydo-Revamp had the firm sleep setting it would be perfect.

Hmm getting the 404 error for Chroma. Doesn't seem to be available at present.

I downloaded from this link but when I installed the rom, using TWRP it failed to start so then I downloaded the kernel and tried installing both but this time it failed with error 70 I believe . Another question: does this ROM have Gapps installed or would I need to also install basic gapps when I do get it going?

I think that I am not wiping my N7 properly. I am never entirely sure what to wipe for a brand new (to me) ROM. On more than one occasion I have even wiped TWRP so I am nervous. Do I wipe system, data and internal storage? I previously just did a factory reset.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

AutoDroid ROM is 4.4.4. Timur's ROM is 4.2.2.
Besides that Timur has added stuff that goes beyond the kernel. Power Event Manager is intergrated into systemui along with drivers and modules. His stuff is also very specific. Have a back up if you try this.

Hello, i hope im right in this topic..
I want to setup my nexus 7 (2012 3g) as a car pc but the old screen of the nav sys is a little bit to small (just 2-3mm) i was wondering if theres a way (yes its rooted) to move the status bar and the soft keys a bit lower/higher to fit the screen? Or make the screen a bit smaller ?
Thank you =)
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-screen-shift-change-screen-t3138718

Also, I don't know I didn't think about this earlier but if your car, or headunit, can control an iPod, which mine can, PodMode: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2220108

What I got....later

Wow didn't know there was an active Car Tablet Nexus 7 thread going on. Maybe I can throw in two cents...or more :cowboy:
(If anyone is interested I could post my setup)

Hi guys, Im almost there with my install :) now im have problem with tasker and waking up tablet. Generally everything works till i start engine..... well when i turn on ignition tablet turns on screen turns on so OK :) BUT when turn the key to start the engine, it cut off the power to tablet for like 2-3 sec and that cause to activate power off profile on tasker, even so power came back and power on profile is on now. As a result tablet goes off after few seconds since i start the engine... :/ I put "wait" task into power off profile but didnt help.... :/ any ideas??
You really can't do much about this as it's the difference between quickly turning your key to starting the engine vs waiting 2-3 seconds, which is what I do as well :p . Sometimes I get the power off screen and I simply cancel it. But if you want a hardware solution, the device is called a "Delay Off Switch". I can point you to this:

For the hardcore electronics ppl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ37vljpHKs
(Use a 200uF capacitor to get a few seconds of ON time)

For the quick fix (but shipping is slow): http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-DC-Dela...rn-off-Switch-Module-with-Timer-/121672288303
(Input connects to 12V, output supports a wide variety of voltages. It's basically a switch)

I had issues even opening up Google maps while in lollipop, soooo sllooooow. I only able to open maps, or music, or OBD stuff, cannot run them together. Now on kitkat I can run at least 2 apps simultaneously without any issues (like maps and music, or music and OBDII stuff). I did get issues when running three apps (music, maps, and obdII stuff). As for dashcommand, the refresh rates is quite ok for me. I like dashcommand morecompared to torque since it has nicer layout/themes out of the box. It's like having GTR multi information display that looks very factory.

I have another irritating issues though. If the nexus7 battery nearly full (above 90%) and charging. I hear a lot of strange noises, even when the engine is off. I touch the screen, doing any activities creates a lot of noises. if I disconnect the charger the noises are gone! and if the battery was like at 50% and charging no funny noises either. I was wondering how do I fix this.....

My setup is using the aux output of the nexus 7 to aux input of the factory bose head unit. Tried to use bluetooth to aux adapter but I did not like the sound quality (too many hissing noise) and also introduces alternator whine :(

Should I get the USB DAC thing?
I just bought one of these.. (not exactly that brand), on mine one of the channels is not working so I only got one side audio channel only :( It also degrades the sound quality I think. I guess I need to bought the better one.

EDIT: What if I buy the ground loop isolator intended for 12volt line like this one? Install it on 12v cigarette lighter (before 12v to 5v dc-dc adapter). If this one works the audio quality will not changed as the ground is lifted on the 12v line.
I use a USB DAC on my setup but also I have it connected to a USB isolator before connecting to a hub. My isolator:

https://www.circuitsathome.com/products-page/usb-interfaces
(No longer has assembled ones. But a google search might reveal other USB isolators.)

Keep in mind that the isolator doesn't support USB 2.0! Which is why I have it connected to my USB DAC only, which is all that needs filtering anyway.

I saw this awhile ago but never posted. Say company I bought my tablet mount from: Reboot Suppressor http://goo.gl/0lerwX
@machmanx interesting drvice. What DAC do you have? The 100mah supply worries me. The UCA202 is listed right at that.
I have the Hifimediy Sabre U2 Asynchronous DAC (old version).

As for power, you shouldn't have to worry as much because current is drawn, not received. Which means the UCA202 will pull as much current as needed and not draw out the full amount of your power supplying component. PSU efficiency is another matter altogether.

yup, that's one of those things you realize instantly.

you have 3 choices only. M-Kernel A76, Franco R82, or Oxydo-Revamp. Oxydo is the only one with otg charging but that doesn't sound like an issue for you.

My system is running ridiculous. My awake time is typically 0% over 18 hours.
I've set a Tasker profile, I'll update an op later, that kills apps and then uses power event manager to sleep the tablet is power event manager fails to do it on its own. Only issue is it will be in airplane mode on wake when that happens.
My problem with falling out of fixed install mode hasn't happened in awhile, the random crash is the cause as I still get the crash and the setting still sticks.
I cannot find how to enable fast charge with oxydo. I've tried kernel auditor and trickster mod. I also enabled the setting via the usb host folder in sys. Can you elaborate how you enabled fast charge? My setup in my car is charging slower than it drains. I have it powered from a head unit behind the tablet. Thanks.

Install the Power Event Manager or PEM (somewhere in the Autodroid 1.2 thread or oxydo-revamped kernel thread) and SuperSU. When setting up PEM, make sure that when you change the "Fixed Install Mode" setting that you actually get a warning for permissions granted for that app. You might have to mess and tinker around with that app until it works though.
