So I've had my Xperia Z for about 2 months now and it has endured water tests, and stress test (software wise). I'm completely satisfied with the results. However I was cleaning my phone with my microfiber cloth and noticed something odd when cleaning. As I look up at the top left of the device I see that there is a slight bulge or lift of the device I am wondering if this was after my long photography session I did with it as it heated up quite a bit and the Snapdragon S4 is around the same area. I'd like to know if anyone came across this lift / bulge and had any issues with it / got it back down because the uneven-ness bothers me mentally, I have still washed my phone however haven't fully submerged it since I've noticed bulge. I'll post some pictures on what I'm talking about, I figured someone here can help me out with this for I won't be close to a Sony Service Center to have a look at my device until July.

What i can tell is either you got faulty device or you just don't know how to treat it correctly cause i know that the device tends to heat up but i have never experienced any unglued spots ...:p

My device went to the point where the back has been unglued for so long the GPS antenna only works when i press the back tightly in the frame..:(

Guess at one point i'm going to have to sent this device in for warranty, but i removed the front and back anti shatter film so i'm kind of afraid to do this.

I've installed 2 new back panels now but they still keep coming off.

There is not enough room for the internals of the phone near the rear camera. The rear panel doesn't sit flush.

Heating up to reglue is pointless. Once the panel is partially unglued, dirt and dust gets in and covers the adhesive. Only option is to either replace the entire back or replace the adhesive.

This flaw is a real pain in the arse. What would be an otherwise great device is marred by this flaw.

You guys are telling that you have glue issues i had too i sent it to sony they took 6 weaks to return it back after using it for 10days the whole cover just fall out without any reason at all. So thats how they fix it. they made it even worst.
i have almost every latest smartphone sony to samsung and nokia but Sony Xperia Z and z1,z2,Z3 are the worst series of smartphone that sony has made !!!!!!!!!!!

I replaced my back panel with new one, from special warehouse that support most of repair services(half of typical price in ebay! but you need to call and order it by yourself)

And because of that I have few advices for people that gonna replace this panel, and no matter what you think, its better to do by yourself why? because you not gonna lost your phone for few days/weeks and most of service centers not gonna notice it if they gonna open your xperia because after removing back panel 50% of them put new one on your device.

You need few tools to replace this panel:
suction cup(something like THIS) I used one from old toy from my friend daughter ;]
hair dryer or put small wet towel in microwave in max power for 2-3min and then put it in plastic bag and quickly put on top of your XZ(you need to be quick if you use this method)
microfiber cleaning cloth
plastic stick with pointed end
hammer and bucked of water
optional:
double side tape

1. heat back panel edges with hair dryer or trick with wet towel, dont worry if its get really hot i found out that this glass conducts heat really good.
after you heat it use suction cup to raise a bit back panel, BUT DONT USE BRUTAL FORCE! because you dont use special heater do it few times: heat and rise, heat and rise... try to start from top of device to bottom. I manage to do this after third heating.
And remember you need to pull up, not in weird angle.

1b. if you dont like to playing soft take screwdriver and "remove" this panel... if you know what I mean ;] just remember not to stick that screw driver too deep, use it only to rise this panel and after that use soft brush(even toothbrush) to remove all small glass shreds from interior :]

2. use plastic stick with pointed end to remove all glue from edges of device and then use microfiber cloth to clean everything
if you have hair dryer, heat a bit edges so all moisture would disappear. Those edges should be almost like shiny plastic.

3(optional) ONLY IF YOU RELLY WANT, use small pieces of double site tape in this places:

dont try using it on battery or other parts, because when you gonna remove it next time you could tear up everything!

4. if your new back panel dont have NFC antenna, using plastic stick remove it from old panel, after rising part of it it should remove easily(dont worry if it bend a bit, its not iPhone...).
Stick it to new panel just like it was in old one.

5. remove special plastic that cover your new back panel, if you dont have it, you bought peace of sh#t and you are screwed :p
Really, because original and good back panel have special glue on the back covered with plastic sheet. Its not typical glue but glue on sponge that is waterproof.
After removing it DONT TOUCH back of this panel, gently grab both edges of it and really slowly put it on your device.

6. using medium presure, squeeze every edge of your phone, then heat it up again using hair dryer or trick with wet towel, and then for few minutes squeeze everything again until its gonna be cold again.

7. pour bucked of water at your head and then grab hammer and scream like Thor calling lightning, because you just replaced back of your xperia.

And what about durability and waterproof?
After few days of really heavy work few times hitting ground(and I even few times sit on it) its still in place.
And if you used original back panel and you cleaned everything really good you should not afraid of cleaning your device in tap water/shower/rain or mud. I didnt only put it in deep water because I never did that even before replacing it...

Of course dont try this if you have no idea what you are doing, bla bla bla, at your own responsibility, bla bla bla.

Reasonable solution to adhesive problem

Dear Xperia Z users

I considered upgrading to Xperia Z3 only because of this problem but with 4.4.4 (and Android L incoming) the Xperia Z is still very nice, so I looked into a solution to solve the adhesive problem.

I have had the same problem and temporarily fixed the problem with new original adhesive, but as others have pointed out it will not last for very long. There is too much hardware in place around the NFC connection area so that the top left corner will lift from the force or in combination with heat from the (sometimes overheated) CPU.

You can glue the phone (Special glue for plastic/glass), but it will be impossible to remove the backcover without the glass breaking and water resistance might be difficult to guarantee. Also when such a type of glue cures, it will become brittle.

As the adhesive simply is not strong enough and give away when the temperature goes up, we have to find a similar product, but one which is stronger, does not weaken when temperatures get high and is unaffected by water. As this phone is very flexible and can twist a lot, we also need to find a material which is equally flexible after curing.

Most of you will know this product already but for those who do not: Sugru (Look it up on Google, I am not allowed to post links as new user on XDA)
Sugru is like clay in your hands for 30 minutes and will become like rubber when fully cured. Sugru can operate in temperatures from -50 to 150 degree Celsius, is flexible after curing and very strong which we as Xperia Z users are very interested in :)

I have successfully used black Sugru instead of the adhesive mask, the cover is fully in place, does not lift when heating the phone, twisting the phone or similar. As added benefit, you cannot see the fix, the black Sugru seal blends in with the black poly-carbonate frame of the Xperia Z. Any excess Sugru can be removed from the glass backcover easily.

Sugru guide:
  1. Carefully remove backcover with proper tools (suction cup, apply heat, plastic prying tools)
  2. Clean the backcover and frame from adhesive mask and dust.
  3. Place Sugru all along the frame so that you have Sugru on the side and bottom of the frame (See attached photo). Be careful that you do not apply too much so that the inside of your phone gets messy. Sugru is non-conducting btw. On the other hand, you will want a complete seal so that you phone is once again water resistant.
  4. When you have Sugru all along the frame push your backcover down in place.
  5. Remove any excess Sugru from your backcover with a cloth or similar.
  6. Let Sugru cure for 24 hours. You might want to clamp it down into the frame or place objects on the whole backside.
  7. Enjoy your water resistant Xperia Z once again :)

I take no responsibility if you break your phone in this process. Please note: Sugru is pretty strong, so strong that it might not be possible to remove the backcover, with similar outcome as if it was glued. The difference from gluing, is that the backcover might still be possible to remove without breaking, the bond is flexible as the phone and that it will blend in with the color of the frame. For other colors of Xperia Z, there is white Sugru or you could mix your own color. Also please do not use "excessive" force at the top of the phone, the internal earpiece speaker might dislodge itself. I had a problem where I could not hear people when using the earpiece speaker, but luckily the problem was only temporarily. The earpiece speaker uses spring loaded connections to the motherboard, if too much force is applied, they will lift from the motherboard and might not connect again.

Hi Quickmcj,
Thanks for your great guidance.
Hope your Sugru seals are holding up. Kindly update.

I had my 1st XZ in Dec 2012, earlier model had major back plate lifting. After a change of backplate and its foam type adhesive backing, it still raised again. End 2013, I glued it dead with Dunlop Contact Adhesive. It only held for a few month and lifted off. Phone died from water.

Bought a 2nd XZ Mar 2014, its 2014 made model has great strong sealing. Now 10 mths later, its lifting again. This time I'm gonna use Aradite 90 min Epoxy to seal it shut. If it fails to waterproof, I shall just use it delicately.

Having read the Sony Support threads, it seems only matter of time before all Z/Z1/Z2/Z3 lose their foam adhesive strength and hence waterproofing.

After almost two years i have this issue also, the fully scratch area is where the glass has lifted. Still have 3months of warranty but I think it will be useless to send it, no ASF on it.

Sent from my C6603 using XDA Free mobile app

#smardu,
We are facing the same issue. There has been many cases of flap cover water sensors showing pink, I believe its water entering thru glass opening and leaching over the nearest ports.

Last month my XZ rear lifted badly. I removed entire cover, I took some Aradite 90 min and glued it back using same method as #quickmcj guide above described. It left some minor overflow at the edges, I left it there to allow for maximum adhesion. Have regained my waterproofing, and phone is now stiffer. Extensive flexing in tight jeans will loosen it over time but I think this time the Epoxy will hold it together for a year or thereoff...

I managed to check the foam tape that was removed. It was only strong while bonded new. Once it loosens, it's no longer sticky and renders totally useless. I didnt bother with my remaining warranty (what could they improve upon).

Hi emailpeter

The Sugru is still holding up, I think the combined properties of good strength and flexibility will make sure the backplate never lifts from the frame. I have bent the phone rather much after the Sugru cured and the troublesome top left corner on the backside has not gone anywhere so far.

I hope your solution will keep the phone waterproof. As you mention, it seems that even the Z3 is not entirely without similar problems. It is kinda sad because all other aspects of these phones leaves a good impression. I guess we have to wait and see what the Z4 will be like :)
