Very nice writeup! But I do have to ask, what are the benefits of a car dock cable vs just using power and an aux cable?
cardock when plugged in goes into S-voice directly and allows the lockscreen to rotate to landscape mode, and also charges the phone and also allows audio to be passed through the usb port.

adding a microphone

Would it be possible to wire in a connection to a wired headset,[...]?

Has all three in one adapter:

Power
Audio Out
Headset (audio out and microphone in)

has anyone been successful with adding a microphone to this setup for hands-free talking?

Note 3

I tried one of the dealextreme samsung audio dock cables on my Note 3 (SM-900v), and got nothing, the resistor value they use is something like 358k. Made one with a 619k resistor as described in this thread, and bam! works perfectly! Fits in the compartment in my dash so much better than having 3/4" of headphone cable sticking out of the front.

Can anyone confirm this working on s4 Galaxy? I need especially audio line-out and charging AC in my car.

Ive got a cable with a 619K resistor in it and i can confirm it does NOT work. Found another post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50027630

This contradicts this thread and shows a reverse pin-out for the micro-usb to the one on this thread.
My cable neither charges my fone, or plays music rom the micro-usb port via this cable.

Im going to try change the resistor to 357K as per the other thread and see if this works.

if you have S4 - it should not work.
There is no HW support for cardock mode (619K) in S4.
It is working upto S3 (incl. latest 4.3 stock FW)

For s4 is working resistor 357k as showed in my picture

Taptalked
Yep. 357k works only for "Home Dock" mode with this cable. It will pass audio through usb plug.

Do we know what value resistor to use to get "Car Dock" mode working, if poss?

Full power charge

I was looking at making one of these but then the other day read a post about original Samsung chargers.
Apparently the original Samsung chargers the Data+ and Data- pins connected to each other and if you don't have an original charger the current is limited to 350mA. (source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1384253)

What I want to do is make up one of these "car dock" cables but also want to achieve the full charge rate (for now my car USB adapter is 1A)

I was thinking about the idea of bridgeing the two data pins anyway and at the same time have them go to the two respective jack pins but would this actually work? I assume it would make the audio signal mono (maybe even a bit stronger?) but would it still activate full charge? Would I even get an audio signal?

Any advice?

Thanks
Justin

No need to join the pins. The phone already assumes that you have high speed charging when you are in a dock, so there's nothing else to do.

Of course the whole concept may be obsolete, but I did find that the cable still worked fine on my S3 with the AOKP kitkat rom.

BTW, I have found some pretty good success using the NFC ReTag app to put the phone in and out of Car Dock mode using an old subway card.
