Hi guys thought you might like to make one of these... dead easy.

Use a piece of string to hold a case from opening flat, and use the little tabs which usually hold the game / dvd booklet inside the case as perfect little feet to hold your tablet.

Just bend the booklet tabs outwards and the Nexus 7 fits PERFECTLY on them. It's funny how perfect the tablet sits on the case. It's nearly identically DVD size, if the case was just a little larger it would double as a carry case AND stand :)

Broke it!

I ended up making this case in much the same way, though my string was actually some spare ribbon I found on a cat toy. Worked perfectly, but I ended up breaking one of the little booklet holders on the DVD case which made my stand lopsided.

Shouldn't be a problem on the next one now that I know to push more slowly. Cool DIY, thanks!

I like this idea. I love homemade options.
Another cheap trick is to use one of the stands from a one-a-day tear off desk calendar.... you know the black plastic, with a kick stand in the back and two tabs on the front that hold up the paper, and are sold at those calendar kiosks around Christmas...... works great....once the pages are gone ;)

Love this thread already.... working on something cool and took this to the next level (but only by one, not making this a dock or anything crazy)

Will post pics here when I'm done!

EDIT - All done, for now....

    attachment.php

I started with an empty Blu-ray case I bought off Amazon in a bulk pack for when I make HD recorded discs. Kind of like ICS blue, almost! God help you if you use those XBOX green cases like someone said earlier, this ain't Gingerbread anymore!!! Tore off the clear insert holder on the outside and fitted the inside with a binder clip, centered it by the width of the CASE, not the location of the disc, and secured with matching blue electrical tape from your favorite hardware store (I use blue and orange exclusively on all my wiring, but that's another story). See pics below for more details on how it goes in.

Once I had the "spring" on the inside so the stand wouldn't CLOSE, I needed a way to keep it taught.... I liked the idea of the string, but I wanted to be able to adjust viewing angle as well, so I started digging through my desk drawers and found the phone-cord looking attachment that comes with those spring keychain clips, again, at the hardware store. Looks like this:

Since I use the clips by themselves for attaching to the drawstring of Oakley bags (it helps me remember to not take off my expensive sunglasses, leave them out of the case and on the table, and have someone steal them when I stand up - it's happened once and that's enough for me!), I left these in a drawer and figured I'd find a use for them eventually. Well that day came! Actually had one in nearly the exact same color as the Blu-ray case too. I fed one end through the disc retention on the back and the other end you want to be able to pull on through the front, then I cut off SOME excess but not all, you'll need something to grab on to when pulling....

Once fitted, I used the blue electrical tape on the base of the stand to prevent it from sliding around when mashing the screen.

Bent the booklet inserts out as stated in the OP to mount the tablet on the stand, and BAM, ready to go, just need to leave it there overnight I think in order for the tabs to stay in that position without having to bend them first one at a time and then insert the tablet, kind of clunky that way if you ask me....

    Enjoy the updated version!

Oh, right, before anyone asks, the case used above is the Cruzerlite Android Clone Army case from here, it's awesome:
