Yes, it works and it does charge. The charging rate is quite fast, but the phone does get hot. The charging coil that is attached to the phone gets extremely hot. The temperature of the battery may go up to about 44 Celsius. The phone would stop charging when it gets too hot but so far I have not noticed any other issues. Everything works perfectly.
I am currently making my own... When I have more time I'll finish it
To watch the progress please check this URL to the photo album where I post progress . I will add photo here and a link to the complete album every time the dock progresses. I have made a dock connector but I haven't taken any pictures yet...
Yes! At least I did it this way. I just made my custom charger yesterday ( it's not a dock) and my phone charged perfectly this night even with sleep tracking app running :good: .
EDIT: I mean direct connect and not thought a regulator.
Will upload a picture of the whole thing later. But just for your curiosity two pics of the building stages.
USB cable with spring loaded pins
"I know that my English isn't perfect, but I still hope it's comprehensible." Send over the cool Xperia Z
Mark 1 charger. Used a One-X case, cut at 3/4. phone sits nice in the case, the right shoulder of the case provides enough pressure on the phone so that the pins on the left stay connected. I also joined the data lines in the cable, huaaa no more need for fast charge kernels. My Asus laptop can provide 1A to the USB port when the data lines are connected.
I intend to modify this so that the power lines do not just hang there, but in a little box, i dunno, I am still thinking. But it's working perfectly. And you can use the phone in portrait mode while charging. Sweet . For connection pins i used a small plastic band that u can see in the first picture, with two protruding pins - some stuff in found in the house.
Thank you for all the great ideas. I successfully made an active motorcycle dock, using the following components:
Ram X-Grip (passive dock)
Pogo-pins from RS (mentioned by several others in this thread)
Sugru (also mentioned in this thread)
Plastic clip (normally used to seal food bags)
I soldered the red and the black usb-wires to each pogo-pin. Then i packed it into some sugru and stucked it to the slightly modified plastic clip. Now I can attach the clip to the X-grip to turn it into an active dock. This way I haven't actually modified the X-Grip, in case I want to use it for another device.
Since the Z is waterproof, fast and has a 5" screen, I think it's perfect for using as a GPS on my motorcycle.
There are alot of good ideas out there and I would like to share mine with you.
I was looking for a way to have magnetic attatchment of the charging cable to the phone as jimsey did in post #25.
However I wanted the actual contact to be magnetic.
This is how i did it.
Order magnets from supermagnete or somewear else, the price was just 5 EUR for 20 magnets.
Description: Block magnet 5 x 4 x 1 mm, ndFeB, N50, gold-plated
Order conductive silver glue price is similar to magnets.
Modify a microusb cable, attach magnets and solder the correct cable to them (polarity of the magnets is important, you dont want them to stick to the wrong contact on the phone).
Get to work!!!

I've finally done my Qi wireless charging mod for my XZ. Below are the list of item use:
- Qi wireless receiver (for Samsung Note 2)
- Qi wireless transmitter
- Krusell leather casing
I modified(a very simple mod actually)Qi wireless receiver for Samsung Note 2 to raise the contact equivalent to the contact to XZ docking contact point. The below picture will hopefully be self explanatory.
I've just built my mark1 dock from a few bits of spare wood and an old sony ericsson ct75 charger plug( from an old powermat powercube), I just moved the spring loaded pins on CT75 plug a little further apart to mate a little more comfortably with the contacts on the XZ.
Cost absolutley nothing so although it looks rubish I'm happy to have a working dock. and not have to open the charger flap anymore. Tomorrow I might cover it in soft black cloth and i'm sure it'll look much better.
I'm going to bend a bit of black or clear Acrylic for my next dock because it looks like you can get away with a kind of z profile, I'm also thinking about making something for my car
