Do I need to be able to open unlock.bin?

I was able to get the unlock.bin from the guy who sold me my One X off Craigslist. I have seen the various guides on how to upgrade one's firmware. Now, in order to upgrade my firmware, do I need to be able to open that file? (I tried to open it and it says that my computer cannot read that type of file) Or, do I just need to have it (and not open it) in order to "point to it" in the upgrade process?

I'm aware of my CID and my corresponding firmware and I did read that guide (several times as I'm a technological idiot, lol) and I was not sure if it was saying that I need to be actually able to open that unlock code or it could just sit in the folder I assign it to as is. I did not want to get that part of the process and realize I did not have proper access to the code and then be in a world of hurt.

Thanks for your reply. I'm getting this ****, slow but sure.
