Okay--so if I buy a new S7 Edge from Verizon, assuming it comes with latest firmware/software, can I root it and install a custom rom? Or do I need to unlock the bootloader first (which I'm assuming isn't possible yet)?

I ask only because I'm coming from a Note 3 running CM13 at 99% stability with great battery life so I'd rather hold off on the S7 Edge until I can put custom roms on it.

Root is possible, yet causes stability and battery issues. Custom ROMs are also availale but they're all based on Touchwiz. No AOSP or CM.

I don't doubt some may be having issues but I'm rooted using stang4litre from with no stability problems and battery life as good as or better than stock. Just my experience.
