Here in Australia the Xoom is not avail yet and no ideas when. Was looking at ebay and none of the wifi ones have GPS. Have asked a few sellers and they also say no.

Ideas?

Disconnect wifi...
I just tried that on mine and it kept saying "location temporarily unavailable." I let it try to find some satellites for a little bit, but no luck. Tested outside with clear view to the sky. Maybe the sdcard update will turn on the GPS also. ;)

With wifi on it could find my location "within 70 meters." GPS should be accurate within a few meters.

I have read in a few articles that the Xooms GPS module is part of the 3G card. Eg all together.

Drop one and you drop the other.
However the motorola site shows the wifi one does have GPS however not 100% confident.

Eg Ipad 2 wifi does not have GPS due to the same reason.

Hmmmm, my GPS doesn't seem to work. This is after 5 minutes of having the 3rd party app running:

Hmmmm, I may have found a bug. Not sure it is generic or specific to my wifi Xoom.

To repro:

1. Make sure GPS is enabled in your settings
2. Reboot
3. Turn on an app that uses the GPS

>>>Notice that the GPS works fine<<<

4. Turn off the GPS app used in step #3
5. Settings >> disable GPS
6. Turn on the GPS app used in step #3
7. Turn on the GPS when prompted by the app

>>>Notice that the GPS does not work<<<

It seems that after you toggle the GPS off from the settings, you can not really turn it back on. A reboot fixes the issue. Also repro when having GPS off in step #1, then turning it on, everything works. Turn it off and then back on, and it does not work until after reboot.

Can anyone try this and confirm?

thats because of CDMA limitations. GSM networks do data+voice simultaneously.
On GSM voice and data are separate infrastructure, thats why AT&T does not have data everywhere they have voice. With CDMA they use the same infrastructure therefore data is everywhere voice is. I believe the new LTE resolves this limitation.

Read through the entire post, does anyone have a solid answer to this.

A definite way to answer the question is to run a 3rd party app, I use "GPS Test" on my HTC Desire and it works awesome, it reports speed, satellites, and power levels.

Is this an option?

Thanks.

On LTE everything is pretty much treated as data - including voice. Glorified SIP calling is where we are headed.

GPS on WiFi Only Xoom DOES WORK without wireless/data connection

1. I have a WiFi Only Motorola Xoom.
2. I downloaded "GPS Test" from the App Store
3. I disabled WiFi on my Xoom
4. I ran GPS Test and it picked up my location with 34 feet.

I also have the WiFi only Xoom.
I've used Google Maps with a cached root and had NO problems getting to my destination.
Went off track a bit too to get some fuel and my little blue guy stayed with me the whole way until I got back on track, then resumed his journey with me.
Used the GPS Test app as well and connected to 11 birds in the sky before, 15ft accuracy.

I've since rooted my HTC Hero and can bluetooth tether my Xoom to it for data; just leave that on while navigating and whalla! No monthly fees for service I'll likely never use more than a couple times per month (nowhere near the 2/3 gigs offered).

Hopefully the Evo 3D doesn't give too many problems when it comes out, and can tether my Xoom.
