Does unlocked BL automatically mean root is possible.

I rooted the Note 7 and every phone before that. Why? Let's start with adblocking. Then I needed Titanium to restore apps. More importantly, I need to restore old versions when I don't like a new version. I needed to go into the sql databases on two apps to get bookmarks and some notes that wouldn't transfer. Then when Oculus decided I shouldn't be allowed to use my new Gear VR, I needed root to spoof my phone type and get access again. I use root constantly. It's my phone, not theirs.

Damn.... I thought that we get root very quick...I guess I'm wrong. Even though the bootloader is unlocked those new system security patches made a difference. I keep my fingers crossed for you guys.

I don't want to be one of those guys asking about ETA, but I would like to know more about what's going on if info is available. Is the LG popular enough that devs are likely to be working on it? Is Nougat causing problems?

I hoped that unlocked bootloader meant we'd be getting progress reports as happened with the Note7. I almost returned the N7 as it didn't have root at the start, but I could at least tell that competent devs were interested in rooting it. I can't seem to tell if anything is happening on the V20.

Is there anywhere I can read technical info about how rooting is approached on Android and what sort of problems Nougat might be causing?

Thanks for any info or links.

BL Unlocked = DEV involvement and interest! I am interested in dev'ing for this device and go through the learning curve of circumventing the new OS restrictions but as more seasoned DEVs like @Chainfire and others have stated, it is becoming difficult to bypass the ongoing security improvements adopted by both the OS (a.k.a Google) and the OEM. In the mean time, just seat tight and wait what's in store.

About your first statement, yes please, don't be one of those guys who asks for ETAs; not cool! : )

as soon as we have a working recovery (well better yet a way to install a working recovery) root is simple. the Motorola with Nougat is rooted, and the latest 7.1.1 for nexus devices also already has root.

Please help me understand. CWM and TWRP are typical custom recoveries. With a locked bootloader, I understand you can't write them to the recovery partition. If the bootloader is unlocked, I supposed one could write one of them.
So obviously, I'm missing something fundamental. Where is the problem? Am I wrong thinking they can be written to the recovery partition?
Or am I right that they can be written, but they need to be customized to work on the V20? Or are there more steps in the middle?
Where can I read about the whole process?

Again, thanks for your reply. I'm not pushing to get an ETA. I'm just interested in understanding how it's done. Where do devs go to start learning about the rooting process?

The issue is that while we have an unlocked bootloader on T-Mobile, the commands that we would normally use following the unlock within fastboot have been disabled in the recent T-Mobile LG devices. So the workaround we did on the G5 is to flash a TOT file with LGUP that contained TWRP in place of the stock recovery on unlocked devices. There's been some mumbling that modified TOT files might not flash as easily on the V20 but we will definitely try when someone builds one.

Ok, thanks. With that info, I've got some more leads on searches to do that should help me understand, particularly about tot files.
