@bibikalka - with mission accomplished me thinks it is time to close up this thread before it goes adrift. You can do that by PMing a moderator; happy to do that on your behalf if you like.

Let's not rush. I shall rename the thread, and edit the 1st post for transparency, to keep other devices in play. It may happen that @k4y0z will get bored, and may decide to scout eBay for some older devices which could use a bit of unlocking. :D

With one good success under the belt of the collective effort, we got some good momentum!

Sure - but if the material consistently stays to far from Fire 8/10 HD roots then it probably belongs elsewhere.

Excellent news! Just bought my HD10 and look forward to using this. Thanks to the developer! Will consider donating after testing.

Good point! I refocused this thread to stay true to its HD8/HD10 mission!

I also posted a new thread in "Fire TV" section, specifically focusing on the Fire TV stick 4k device (which a lot of people seem to really want unlocked according to the poll):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/general/please-donate-to-k4y0z-bl-unlock-twrp-t3913935

It's actually quite rare when with such a relatively moderate level of donations we can achieve so much !
@k4y0z lives in Europe, and Amazon devices seem to be quite a bit pricier over there. But still - we can overcome that with some purposeful crowd funding. In the old days, they did unlocking"bounties", but here @k4y0z can just shoot fish in the barrel, as long as the device is in his possession :D

Awesome!

I've been following from the start but didn't have anything to contribute. I'm going to test it as soon as I can; thanks!! :good:

Is there a bootloader unlock for HD8 2016? If not, could anyone give some instructions on how to modify the existing unlock for my device? I'm an advanced Linux user comfortable opening my device and compiling code, but I'm relatively new to Android specific hacking and development. Hoping to learn as much as possible.

Since I didn't do the HD8 unlock and have neither of these devices probably not, sorry.
I would need access to the actual hardware to do that.

I have an extra HD 8 7th Gen (2017) motherboard and battery I'd be happy to send you if that would help. When we were doing the hardware rooting I thought I broke my original board so I ordered one with a shattered screen from eBay but then revived mine. Unfortunately I threw everything away but the board and the battery.

Let me know.

ps. After connecting the battery and powering on the board responds to adb commands as if it were a complete device.

Has the unlock been done for the HD 8 2017? If not I am interested in making it happen.

There's nothing yet for the bootloader unlock.

And I agree, I'd be interested in helping the cause as well. I imagine plenty of others feel the same. It's the last of the recent bunch without an unlock.

Plus, Lineage 14.1 could likely be ported from the 2018 HD 8.

Yeah. This is really cool. I definitely would come together with you and whoever else is interesting in supporting this and pooling together whatever resources are necessary.

NO. LOS 14.1 cannot be ported since uses custom boot.img and locked bootloader doesn't allows to boot it.

@k4y0z would you be willing to work on the 2017 HD 8 unlock if we provided the funds for a device? Either now, or in the future, whenever you have time. Do you even have any space in your house for another Amazon device?!? :D

P.S. I have seen echos of fastboot being used to flash images. We know that's not possible as the current setup stands. So if my research in the past year was at all right, then we can use the kit I have to build and sign factory images (with official tools and official signatures included), to our hearts content. It just so happens I have the kit with everything needed to do just that, including the source code to the bootloaders and kernel (mediatek) as well as other proprietary things. We just need to get.this fastboot built.

Hey guys, I've been looking into this for a while now and have practice in reverse engineering and have worked with lk's before. I currently own a fire HD10 (7th gen). Due to it being a personal device (and my sons) I would like to request donations to work on fresh HD's. So far I see great research and have even learned more myself. I would like to thank... @[email protected]
For giving me a better understanding of the complexity of this process.
    Lol

I donated, so I'd clearly love to see this happen. Best of luck guys.

For standardization, one could go with 5.5.0 bootloaders from this early ROM - update-kindle-40.5.9.1_user_591450020.bin
I would rather use the newest exploitable LK to ensure compatibility with the newest boot-images.

@k4y0z / @xyz` - what's the level of challenge for the unlock ? With another volunteer that has HD10 opened, testing can be done with imperfect versions, and BootRom access via shorting.
The HD10 forces 64-Bit kernel which makes the exploit more difficult and also requires repartitioning the device.
This would also mean decreasing the size of userdata-partition by about 110MiB and an increased boot-time of about 10 seconds.
It also requires a factory-reset since userdata needs to be reformatted.
I actually have a working exploit for another device that also forces 64 bit, so I know it's possible.
Unfortunately I don't own a Fire HD10, which I would need to work on it.
