Yeah, but there are times you're caught short. For example, I had to stay at work last Saturday and then take a van out to some place in London. I used my phone to navigate. That's on of the biggest battery killers there is, GPS on, data being used, screen permanently on... if I had the option, I would probably switched to red screen. (I don't usually do this, so I didn't have a cig lighter charger)

As it was, my battery did me well, I still had 30% remaining, 20% by the time I got home after work. If I'd had to go out again, I might have been in trouble.

GPS on probably takes up more battery than display being on. :) you can still use navigation with the screen off, I turn screen off when I know my turn is not close by.

Yeah, but GPS is not optional when navigating :) I couldn't really turn the screen on and off, it wasn't like I was driving for 30 minutes between turns, this is Central London :)

All I'm saying, I would do anything I could to conserve a little power.

Hey if you really want to save battery use Google maps not navigation :p hahaha I understand brother.

I really doubt anyone is going to double their battery life with this. Who has their screen on 100% of the time?

Cool concept, but I'm betting it's not going to be very useful.

From the article:

All measurements taken in airplane mode with GPS disabled. “Baseline” is the current used when showing Launcher with a SurfaceFlinger mask causing all pixels to be rendered black. (That is, everything along the pipeline was being exercised except the actual OLED pixels.)

Filtering to show only red pixels only requires 35% of the original baseline OLED panel current, on average. Adding back the baseline current, the best case overall is about 42% of the original system current, effectively doubling the battery life.
If you don't understand this, please don't argue about what's using the battery, and how much this modification can yield.

Keep wifi off and the battery life improves drastically. There has been other comments about gps and location awarenes draining batteries.

I wish people that didn't really understand this, just not bother posting, like the two people above. Really, what did either of those posts add to this thread. The use of this has been explained many times.
agree.
this gives people an option. just because you are satisfied with an underclocked processor and leave off wifi and other crippling features doesnt mean others want to. Id rather save battery by having a unicolor screen vs. turning off my wifi -_-

The battery savings would be a nice perk, but I think the best use for this would be night mode. It would sure help when using Google Sky Map :)
