Downside to upgrading Hboot?

Curious if anyone knows if there are any downsides to go ahead and updating one's firmware. For instance, I'm on 1.23 right now (was using a JB Rom for a while) but on an ICS Rom as I liked some of the features. If I want to try out a JB rom again but need to update my Hboot (to 1.31), can anyone think of any reasons why that might limit my options in the future?

There are no downsides for upgrading from 1.23 to 1.31
both are JB firmwares, except 1.31 less buggy.
Not sure differences with respect to AOSP(no-sense) roms, but im sure your will have the bugs(GPS mostly) already in 1.23

Thanks for your reply. One more question: When I upgrade my Hboot (say, using the tool on this site), I realize I have to back up all the contents of my phone onto my computer as everything will be wiped. Is it acceptable to just copy and paste all the files/folders onto my computer and then do the reverse to get it back on after I update?

You can just flash the same Jb rom directly on 1.23 hboot

it depends on the tool you will use.
Most tools should wipe userdata(data partition not SD) only (by locking and unlocking), and NO make a nandroid backup using your custom recovery then restore it with the same recovery after flashing the hboot(firmware).

BONUS:
here is how to update manually(SD won't be wiped for sure with this method):

0.make sure you have atleast 75% battery and you have the boot.img(incase it gets stuck at htc logo) from your custom_rom.zip
1.make full backup from custom recovery
2.lock bootloader "fastboot oem lock" (get into bootloader by holding power+voldown for 10 seconds)
3.boot into ruu mode "fastboot oem rebootRUU" - notice the capitals
- Flash new hboot(firmware) "fastboot flash zip C:/path.to.firmware.zip" - repeat if it asks you to
- boot into bootloader again
4.unlock bootloader "fastboot flash unlocktoken C:/path.to.unlock_code.bin"
5.restore full backup
(flash boot.img from bootloader if it gets stuck in HTC logo)
then transfer the backup to your PC (its large, around 1-2GB)

Wow, that's cool. I'll definitely do it that way then. And it doesn't matter that the nandroid you make/restore is from your old Hboot and not a JB rom? (Can't see why it would, just checking. There's so many idiosyncrasies with flashing on this phone. Lol)

This method should work fine as upgrading the hboot changes hardware communication methods(mostly) and this affects nothing towards the rom.

The worst case scenario is that you will reflash your rom then restore the data partition (and boot.img) from advanced restore options in the custom recovery.
