But this is a very old firmware version. You should flash the most recent one.
You're right, I got confused by the numbers. Interestingly my tablet never alerted me about software updates. Device bought in Singapore, currently lives in UK :)

UPD: flashed latest firmware, rooted, all worked like charm.

When I updated my Z2 fone to the 314 rom, I needed to reroot. My /system couldn't be mounted rw. I tried multiple ways to remount it rw and none worked. Installing XZDualRecovery solved my problem. No wipe was necessary, nor was one performed. No data was lost either.

Finally, my device is now fully rooted after Installing XZDualRecovery! Thanks :)

Can I Still get OTA's?

I'm receiving my Tablet Z2 in the mail today and I am excited to be able to have root access without losing warranty. With Root access via the steps outlined in the OP, will I still be able to get OTA updates? If I want to upgrade to the latest version, am I good to go or do I need to unroot and restore to factory, do the OTA and then re-root?

Thanks for your time!

Followed the OP's steps and everything worked great, thanks!

Problem is I can't figure out how the hell to move apps to my SD card now. I know this functionality was limited in Kit Kat but I thought being rooted would allow me to get around that. Really annoying since I have 32GB just waiting to hold all my apps and data.

I keep getting this message when I restart the tablet
"unfortunately the process android.process.acore has stopped"
And not sure at which step it happend as I did each step one after the other. I'm thinking it was the sdfix but not sure, any advice would be much appreciated

Verified working on build 17.1.2.A.0.314

Just some tips.
1) Copy towelroot apk first to the folder.
2) Set display timeout to 5 minutes max
3) Verify ADB works by typing adb devices in the CMD window. Don't forget to confirm on the tablet
4) Make sure you confirm (on the tablet) when running the bat file (probably will ask you a couple of times.
5) Run the bat file 2 or 3 times until it finishes properly (I had to do this 3 times)
6) Make sure you install SuperSU from market. Reboot if needed
7) I used root explorer to set the /system to RW.
8) SuperSU should update binary when you open it.

My personal experience with Sony support suggests they have a tool which detects changes to the OS after a restore. I restored my system after root and still couldn't get service. Please correct me if I am mistaken if this tool does something dual recovery tool does not. Beware if sending in for RMA.

Any news on a working root for 4.4.4 ?

The update has rendered my device next to useless with no write to SD card option unless its rooted.

What were Google thinking when they wiped Flash support and ruined SD card capability ?!

I cant even read my .cbr files anymore as I cant point to the SD card directory as the app requires write permission.

Thanks for this very helpful guide! It worked very well even for me, with not so deep knowledge.
But I do have a problem now: I can not power off my tablet normally with the button! :crying:
I have a sgp511 with 17.1.2.A.0.314.
After the rooting I ran Backup TA and installed several apps from the market: SuperUser, ROM Manager, ROM Toolbox Lite, Titanium Backup, SDFix, Complete Linux Installer, androidVNC, Terminalemulator, myTorrent and MIT AICompanion.
I have used the ROM Toolbox's Root Browser to check the status of /system and gets the answer rwxr-xr-x. On root I have rwx.
Some issues with the apps have been SuperUser, which shuts the device off when I try to update the bins, so I have deinstalled it.
The Complete Linux Installer app also seems to malfunction, because it doesn't find the ROM I've downloaded.

So, anyone having a clue what causes I can't power off the device?

Please, tell a newbie how to do!

+1

Need root for latest 4.4.4 update. I bet it's Sony that's messed us up.

I sent Sony an Email a few days ago about this and this what they said :

"Dear Gary,

Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre, regarding transferring applications onto the SD card from your Tablet Z2.

I can confirm that it is not possible to transfer applications onto the SD card, this was put in place by android from the 4.0 update. I do apologise but there are no plans to put the option to transfer applications onto the SD card with the next update. I am sorry for any inconvenience caused."

Looks like Lollipop doesn't even address this issue either, so thank heavens for the smart guys at XDA for giving us full use of our devices.

Thankfully, with a lot of very patient help from a member named kulvertti, I was able to downgrade my firmware, root, then re-flash with his version of 4.4.4. Everything works perfectly and I cant thank him enough, as well as the other members working so hard to give us capable devices.

Thanks.

Sounds like downgrading to 4.4.2 is our only option, why the hell was the towelroot method patched. What idiot thought that was a good idea?
