I am writing this to share my experience of rooting HTC devices in easiest manner possible. There is a missive amount of data about it available but if it still confuses you - this might help!

It consist of of doing three things : Unlocking your phone via HTC DEV, Installing=Flashing 4EXT, Installing=Flashing SU file.

If you want to root your HTC running ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) first problem you will find is that most Tutorials are written for HTC Sensation (or Sensation XE) running system v 2.3.5. If you already updated to Ice Cream Sandwich v4 read below.

1. Use Windows. I was doing that on Linux as well as Windows7 on VirtualBox and I don't wish you to go through the same problems !

2. Do the normal preparation with installing HTC Sync and removing it, as well as enabling debugging, stay awake and disabling fastboot. If you can't get moving with this point - download drivers for HTC.

3. Go to HTC Dev website. Register. Log in, go to 'Unlocking' section. If you don't have any of required composites listed on the right like java you will need to install it.

Guide there will show you how to install sdk and update it step by step. Once done, it will give you code that you need to copy and paste on their webpage. You will receive unlocking file directly from HTC by email. Follow rest steps in email. Now your phone is 'Unlocked'.

4. Follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861 - [GUIDE] Flashing roms with S-ON by Asskicker2.

You have done step one, do now step two and three (Flashing a recovery and Enable 4EXT smartflash)
You need to make sure that every time you boot into Recovery and into 4EXT this is enabled. Now you have 4EXT installed.

5. Search internet and download:

Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip or su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip

Place it on sdcard card of your phone in main catalogue.
Turn off your phone, pull out battery, put it back, place cover, press vloume down and power button till it goes to boot.

Choose using volume button RECOVERY. Now 4EXT will load, go to Tools and click Enable 4EXT SmartFlash if not enabled.

Go back using arrow at the bottom, click Install zip from sdcard. Choose and install Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip or the other one - which ever you downloaded. Once finished, choose REBOOT or POWER OFF and after 10 seconds start your phone.

In your phone Application list look for for Superuser icon with pirate patch on Android eye. Click it and press OK when channel-log comes up.
You are rooted. Enjoy.

If any will encounter any problems search the internet for more info regarding steps to go through HTC Dev, Installing 4EXT or using 4EXT to install/flash files. I have done this on HTC Desire, Incredible S, Sensation, Sensation XE.
