Windows 8 is not your problem, i have done this on Windows 8 with all 3 versions of Odin. Verify the Samsung drivers are working properly. You should see a com port when in download modeNo I check that and I was good I tried odin 3.0.7 and 0.9 version and nothing hmm I'll have to check another windows computer I think to test and see I have the files on my SD so I'll recheck but I don't know if windows 8 is my issue but when I rooted I ran windows 7 and it worked. And tips to help maybe something else I didn't try

Please just tell me whether or not I need to install the SDEXT FIX if I only need to root using CFAutoRoot?
The SD card fix worked just fine...i have zero issues writing to it. If you are rooting the official and only doing recovery you might be fine, if not just flash and it should solve the issue
You are not helping me here. I wouldn't root if I know it will cause this problem. That is why I am asking to have an answer from someone who did this already.
refer above
I prefer TWRP and I was able to flash ROMS I wasn't able to with Philz....TWRP flows better and is way easier to navigate....try it out you won't be disappointedThat's weird. I am in a similar situation. I have a T-Mo Note 3 rooted with De La Vega, stock ROM, but with TWRP recovery. I am also on AT&T via Straight Talk. I was expecting that it would not allow me to update because I was rooted, but when I checked for an update, it said one was available. I started to download it, but thought better of it and cancelled. I remember that there were problems before with people updating rooted phones OTA.
I think i'll just do it the way the OP says. I'm gonna get on that now.
EDIT:
I see that someone posted a link to a TWRP recovery as well and said that it works. I am already familiar with TWRP, is there any benefit to switching to Philz Recovery?
