Agreed, I know what they can be like, even at the best of times! However, if KNOX isn't tripped they won't know! Is there anyway you can just check this in your bootloader to see if it's intact please? :) No rush!
Hang on and I'll have a look in settings / about. I would guess it's there?

I'm guessing that is saying knox isn't tripped but I don't know??

When I reboot I don't see any of the little messages at the top of the screen that I normally get when I'm rooted and on a custom rom. It boots like what it is - stock.

Thanks for looking. Actually I think you just need to start up the bootloader. ie Power off your phone, Press and hold: Power + Home + Vol Down, On the warning screen, press Vol Up (Continue)
It should say something like "KNOX Warranty Void 0x0". If it says 0x1, it's tripped!

That's why I need it. At work, I get reception about 30% of the day. Really frustrating on long conversations. I know that EE are SO slow at updates, but I guess I can wait. Plus I only tend to get itchy feet when the next OS comes out (ie Android N in this case).

I know what you are saying about slow updates. But mainly I need my phone to be stable and have good battery life and like you I'm only really bothered about major updates.

For a while now I've been asking myself why I even bother rooting these days, but there's one big reason I still do. I can't stand the adverts in my browser and apps, so I install adaway and I need root for that.

But I've installed the adblock browser and it's just as good as chrome or firefox (I see it's based on firefox). I also like the search engine it uses (duckduckgo - no tracking). I'm not getting ads popping up in any of the apps I use so far, so I am thinking I might hold off rooting for a bit. However, we will see - I've said this before and I always end up rooting the phone.

Anyway, once I have twrp installed I can back up my stock ee rom, flash a custom rom for a look and see it doesn't offer me anything I need, and flash the ee stock back with twrp.

Yea fair point. I usually root day one, but actually now I don't feel the need. As with you, Adblocking is usually the main reason as well as Titanium Backup. Infact when I got my Note 3 (previous device) I staved off rooting for a whole year (partially due to Xposed framework not working on 5.0 back then). Secondly I'm not a huge root fan on brand spanking new devices. I tend to let others make errors first and then in a year when it's been done thousands of times, then I'll go for it.

Yep, I'm watching the S7 TWRP thread with interest as I want to flash it, but it's going wrong for too many people so I'm holding off.

I only need titanium if I'm going to switch roms. When the time comes it will be getting installed again.

It's out of order that are phones are plagued with advertising. They cost us a fortune to buy, plus we pay a lot of money to the mobile networks, and still we get hit with all this advertising ****e!!

Forgot to ask, do I need to just flash this , and none of the other 4?

PS. I forgot to mention, if you trip KNOX, then Samsung Pay will not work I understand. So consider that when root comes into play (if you want to use that service or not). I sure as hell do :)

I flashed all 4 - AP, BL, CP, CSC.

I did not flash home. I don't even know how to do that. There isn't a corresponding option in Odin.

The firmware version I flashed is shown in the image below - along with the files I did and did not flash.

If you trip knox can you not reset it by going back to a stock rom? I'm guessing no but not sure.

Doing this won't trip knox, recovery does say the status is "unofficial" but that can be solved by restoring through kies / smart switch
